Is It Possible To Grow Sunflowers From Seed?

Sunflowers are heat-tolerant, pest-resistant, and attractive to pollinators, making them ideal for harvesting in late summer and fall. They can be grown in most soil types, from clay and loam to sand mixes, and should be planted in full sun for the best flowering and sturdiest stems. Sunflowers are heliotropic, meaning their flower heads follow the sun, and ample space is needed for their growth.

To plant sunflowers, dig a shallow trench and space them about 30 inches apart. For best results, amend the soil with compost before planting. Sunflowers do not tolerate cold, hard, or cold weather. Home gardeners usually plant annual sunflowers, including dwarf and tall varieties with multiple branches and blooms. Sunflower seeds can be grown from the same type of seeds that you eat.

The best time to plant sunflower seeds is between April and May. Sow seeds individually in 10cm pots of peat-free, multi-purpose compost, covering them with soil. Sunflowers have sensitive roots, so transplanting is not recommended. Seeds should be planted at a depth of 1″ and given at least 6″ of space.

Girl or Russian varieties are preferred for seed production, and they grow to 1 – 2 inches tall.
