How old is Mary Call in Where the Lilies Bloom?
In the rural Appalachian mountains, fourteen-year-old Mary Call Luther cares for her siblings after her mother’s death and the illness of her father, Roy Luther. Roy teaches his four children about “wildcrafting”, the medicinal use of wild herbs, but he struggles with a chronic cough. Mary Call and her brother Romey bathe their young sibling, Ima Dean, and write in her secret journal before bed. Roy approaches her daughter with a request that she take over as head of household upon his death.
Roy warns that Kiser Pease, a neighbor who usurped the Luther family’s land by paying back taxes and making them sharecroppers, is intent on marrying Devola. Mary Call promises to prevent the union. The next day, Roy’s condition worsens, but the children ease their father’s illness with herbal tinctures and he slowly improves. One day, Mary Call and Romey deliver potatoes to Kiser, who is incapacitated with pneumonia. Mary Call saves Kiser’s life with a bath of hot onions and demands that he relinquish the Luther homestead in return. When Kiser signs Mary Call’s handcrafted contract, she agrees to keep him well.
At the town store, shopkeepers Mr. and Mrs. Connell warn Mary Call and her siblings that they will be sent to an orphanage when their father dies, but Mary Call is resolute that Roy will heal. As Mr. Connell drives Mary Call and Romey home, he informs them that the medicinal herbs they harvest in the woods fetch a high price at market and offers them a means to support themselves. When Mary Call rushes to tell Roy the good news, she finds her father dead. That night, the children bury Roy and decide to keep his death a secret for fear of being separated.
The next morning, Kiser leaves his car at the Luther homestead, and Mary Call convinces him to give her the keys so she and her siblings can listen to the radio. The children take the car for a treacherous joy ride, and when they return home, they find Kiser on the front porch, wondering about their father’s whereabouts. Kiser is appeased by their story that Roy decided to stay behind during their excursion and gives Devola a piglet. When Mary Call suggests that Devola likes cows, Kiser returns with a cow for the family and demands to see Roy, but his efforts prove futile and he grows suspicious of Mary Call’s excuses.
That night, Kiser is severely injured by a passing car, and Devola tells her siblings that she loves him. Although Mary Call is outraged, Devola argues that their father was wrong about the young man. As time passes, the children begin to resent Mary Call’s austerity and the family grows somber. One day, Kiser’s sister, Goldie, stops by the Luther homestead to see Roy and is appalled by the condition of the house. Mary Call insists that Kiser signed the property over to Roy and hands her the contract for proof, but Goldie deems the agreement worthless and evicts the Luthers.
Desperate to save her home, Mary Call visits Kiser in the hospital and proposes marriage, but the young man misunderstands and believes she is referring to a union with Devola. For everyone questioning the title, “Eve, Psyche and the Bluebeard’s wife” are three different women who did the forbidden in their own ways, as the message of this song is that Le Sserafim won’t behave like the rules tell and that they will commit whatever is forbidden if they want to. Eve (as in Eve and Adam) ate the forbidden apple just as Eunchae refers to in her verse, Psyche is Cupid’s lover who was told to never look at Cupid’s real form but she once took a candle to come look at him during the night and got punished, as for the Bluebeard’s wife, she was forbidden by Bluebeard to enter a room in their home where she went and discovered all Bluebeard’s previous wives dead heads hung on the walls.
I wish for what’s forbidden~, The title name for this song is perfect. Eve, Psyche, and Bluebeard’s wife are all women that pushed for what is forbidden and for le sserafim they are trying to push the boundaries of K-pop, the boundaries of an idol, the boundaries of music into something that’s totally their own, and to reach for what’s forbidden. It’s really beautiful and represents the concept of unforgiven with a nice rhythm, a groovy sound, and fun choreography. Thank you for all your hard work! I am looking forward to supporting Le sserafim on all future endeavors! ❤❤❤
this MV is🔥 ! It somehow reminded me of how hard they train before debuting in the world is my oyster docu-series. Here it shows, the result of that sweat and tears. That tight, clean and neat the level of dance! This particular MV mark a new level version of a girl crush, bad girl vibe, even to the beat of the song.. BIG shout out to the team (mentioned in the description) to make this MV happen and at the same time able to showcase the Fimmies that is churning out hits that’s definitely hitting it hard in 2023 and years to come! :hand-orange-covering-eyes::face-red-heart-shape::eyes-pink-heart-shape:
1:44 Sakura… I was a light fan of Sakura-tan more than 10 years ago when her debut and she was so small and like a adorable sister. After a long years since I stopped following AKB, I am totally blown by Sakura leading as a center of the cool group. I can imagine how she has struggled and overcome every challenge. She’s a legendary. Yunjin at the intro is also slaying!
Even i heard this a hundred times and the other collab i’m still in awe how they used the three mythological female figure and explaining how “curiosity” will lead you to the misfortune at the same time unfolding the truths and no holding back to do what you want even if it is a fall down hahahaha this song scream idgaf and also this can be metaphoric to all female idols situation in industry
I feel like everything about the song and the MV it’s perfect: the song it’s so catchy and has an interesting meaning behind it, and the MV has so many artistic details (and of course they slay the choreo). Also, the expressiveness of Eunchae and the girls in general is *chef kiss 🤌LE SSERAFIM is extremely talented
I’m a casual fan but wow this song is nice (。・//ε//・。) I love the alignment of title to song message too. Like Eve (who ate the forbidden fruit), Psyche (who looked at Eros despite being told not to) and the Bluebeard’s wife (who opened a forbidden room/chamber), these are all ladies who committed/did something forbidden it aligns to “I wish for what’s forbidden” part. I’m impressed (๑♡⌓♡๑). It’s like telling us to be fearless, sometimes curiosity is not bad hahaha
