Hydrangeas Can Be Rooted From A Leaf?

Hydrangeas are hardworking plants that can be propagated by cutting them from stems. To start a new hydrangea plant from a leaf, keep the cutting moist and find a leaf node below a leaf cropping to provide nutrients to the stem as it grows roots. The freshly cut stem needs to be dipped in rooting hormone, similar to rose cuttings.

Choose healthy leaves from the current year’s growth, avoid old leaves with spots or damage. Rooting hydrangea cuttings is one of the easiest ways to double your stock. It involves cutting branches, dipping them in rooting hormone, and planting in vermiculite or sterile soil.

Propagating hydrangeas from cuttings is incredibly easy and has a high success rate for woody plants. Overgrown hydrangeas can be propagated using pruning supplies, trimming off the lower end, removing some leaves, cutting the two largest remaining leaves into half to reduce moisture loss, and dipping the lower end in rooting hormone.

To propagate hydrangeas, cut off a small branch, trim the leaves, and dip them in rooting hormone. Cut each piece right above the node where leaves attach to the stem, where new roots will form. Remove all leaves except one set at the top. Mix 1 part peat/potting soil and 1 part medium to fine grade perlite, vermiculite (expanded lava), or sand. Cut each hydrangea leaf in half to reduce water loss and stress during the rooting process.
