How To Waterproof A Concrete Patio?

Waterproofing concrete surfaces involves cleaning and preparing the surface, which can be done by using a gallon of waterproofer or sealant depending on the porosity of the concrete. It is essential to follow the manufacturer’s safety precautions, such as wearing chemical-proof gloves and protective eyewear, and good ventilation when applying any type of sealer or sealant.

When waterproofing a concrete slab, it is crucial to attach flashing between concrete and wood to create a waterproof seal. Sealing the concrete should be part of the initial conditioning of the surface and should be done periodically over the life of the concrete. Concrete repair products or Liquid Rubber Sealant and Adhesive Caulking can be used to fill in cracks and level out uneven areas.

Coating your concrete patio with sealer or paint can protect it from the elements and make it look better too. There are many different concrete coatings available, but it is important to follow the manufacturer’s instructions for cleaning, preparing, and staining your driveway, deck, basement, patio, and more.

To prepare the surface, sweep away debris, remove any paint, mastic, or grease with the right substances, and use a floor cleaner. For the most effective application of concrete sealers, three days of moderate temperatures and dry weather are needed. Concrete sealers that produce a waterproof membrane on the surface, such as Red-guard or Aqua-Defense, can be used.

In summary, waterproofing concrete surfaces is a crucial step in maintaining their durability and longevity. By following the manufacturer’s safety precautions and following the manufacturer’s instructions, you can ensure the best possible outcome for your concrete surfaces.

📹 Waterproofing – Flashing a Concrete Slab To Porch

In this Rogue episode, Matt will show you a method to waterproof this very tricky transition between a wall and flat concrete slab.

Can you waterproof an existing concrete slab?

Aftermarket slab waterproofing solutions include sealers and coatings, particularly for ground-level slabs not under heavy water pressure. The strength of the concrete surface determines the sealer’s effectiveness. Epoxy and urethanes are commonly used as sealers. Coatings are often used in conjunction with other methods like split slabs, dimple sheets, or perimeter drains. Split slabs are commonly used in commercial applications, where a membrane is placed over the existing floor, followed by concrete pouring over it. This creates a top deck that absorbs wear and a bottom deck that carries structural load, allowing water to drain away over the membrane.

How to make a concrete patio waterproof?

Concrete can be protected against water using acrylic, polyurethane, and polyurea-based materials for areas exposed to direct water and sunlight, such as roofs and terraces. These practices are applied directly to concrete surfaces. Concrete admixtures for waterproofing are added to cement during concrete preparation before pouring to make concrete waterproof and durable. These materials create a crystalline effect by reacting with moisture, forming crystal fibers on the pores and capillary gaps of concrete, providing permanent water impermeability.

This crystalline effect increases the performance of concrete by showing a crystalline effect every time it comes into contact with water, resulting in durable, strong concretes that are not affected by water. Therefore, admixture in concrete is essential for achieving strong, water-resistant concrete.

Should I waterproof my concrete patio?

Concrete sealants are recommended for flat surfaces due to their even drying and penetration into small crevices. There are various types of sealers available for patios and driveways, each offering specific benefits. Acrylic resin-based sealers are a common and inexpensive option, creating an air-tight barrier over concrete. However, they may develop a slightly yellowed tint in direct sunlight, especially when mixed with silicone products. Overall, sealers should be applied according to the location and environment.

Is 100% concrete waterproof?

Concrete can absorb moisture and have water resistance based on its drying and hardening process. Fresh, wet concrete is more susceptible to repeated irrigation than finished concrete, which can be used in various structures like houses, gardens, bridges, office buildings, and factories. Waterproof cement is an alternative, used as a binder in the mixing and tempering of concrete, which is part of the concrete mixture.

What is the downside of sealing concrete?

Sealing concrete can create a slippery surface, especially when wet, which can pose a hazard in areas like swimming pools. To avoid this, adding abrasives to the sealer mix can provide more grip. However, most sealers are solvent-based and contain potentially toxic chemicals, which can be dangerous to humans and pets. Safety gear is required for those working with these chemicals. Safer, more environmentally-friendly sealers are available, but they are more expensive.

What is the best additive to make concrete waterproof?

Sika® Watertight Concrete Powder is a water-resistant and HRWR/superplasticizing admixture that is utilized to enhance the workability of concrete and mitigate the permeability of water. The financial implications of creating a watertight structure are contingent upon a number of variables, including the thickness of the concrete section, the geographical location of the site, the scale of the project, the availability of access, the construction schedule, and the necessity for joint sealing.

Can I put a layer of cement over concrete?

The practice of pouring a new layer of concrete over an existing layer can offer certain benefits. However, it is often preferable to remove the existing concrete before pouring a new layer, taking into account the advantages and disadvantages of each approach.

Is it better to paint or seal a concrete patio?

Color sealing is the preferred method for driveways, carports, pathways, and patios, while paint is known for its thick consistency, propensity to become slippery and flaky over time, and difficulty in re-painting once worn.

How do you permanently waterproof concrete?

Liquid waterproofing gel is a commonly utilized product for the purpose of waterproofing concrete walls. Upon application to the exterior surface of the wall, it forms a rubber-like coating that provides a barrier against the ingress of water.

  • Level transitions between inside and out are also really helpful to people with mobility impairments. As the population ages it helps people using walkers and wheelchairs most of all. I wish you’d been able to show us more details here. Are the interior and exterior slabs separate pours and thermally broken? From the article it looks like a gap of several inches between the upturned lip of the pan and the interior edge of the door threshold. What will fill that space?

  • Matt, here’s a solution I just thought of. Could you do something similar to a linear drain that are used for indoor showers? Basically, have a drain that spans one foot from each side of the door located underneath the door/window. Then the bottom of the window/door could actually be recessed and be totally flush with the floor for a true zero threshold.

  • Behr makes a pretty good sealer, it just takes A LOT of coats to actually get the results you are looking for. Hiring a local contractor you will most likely get a much better product. My local supplier always says “home depot and other box stores have to water down their products because they have to worry about a homeowner taking it home and drinking it…” 🤣

  • I would have suggested that before sealing and after power washing, you applied primer and 1/8 thick of self leveler color of your choice, then sealer, this would have given you perfect brand new look leveled sealed floor, but its true you would have busted your back on that floor for one or two extra days… other then that looks decent.

  • I like your dog we have 2 little guys and a balcony that is leaking even after I resurfaced it with a coat of water proof cement. I now have to seal it and paint it to look good. So do I put the sealer down first or the paint. I think is should be the sealer. Any idea which I should do first? Paint or concert sealer? I got both from Behr.

  • I hate to be a downer but this is a good example of what NOT to do. Good preparation will bear good results. Filling in the cracks with a concrete caulk or even better, resurfacing the entire patio would have been worth the extra work. TBH, the cracks now make it look awful. In addition now that’s it’s “sealed”, it’ll be near impossible to resurface in the future.
