Small gardens can transform into something special with clever planning. To make your garden design a big success, choose a focus and start planning around it. Draw out the shape and boundaries of the plot and try out different designs to see what can be included, such as a patio, decking, or small shed.

Create zones and add screening to make the space feel bigger and add interest. Create one large focus area and then work a smaller zone into your design. This will help you enjoy your garden from different vantage points. Outdoor screening is a clever way to divide up your space into zones and can hide essential but uninspiring things.

What is the best way to arrange plants in a garden?

Horizontal layers are plant masses that overlap and interlock from the front of the plant bed to the back along the ground plane. They should vary in depth along the front of the plant bed in the same way that the height varies along the top of the plants. Two basic rules when arranging plants in the beds are to space the individual plants so they touch each other when they reach their mature size and to overlap the masses of plants and connect them so they flow without space between them. Avoid gaps or large open areas between masses to avoid disrupting the composition.

The background or tallest layer is typically located along a fence, wall, or property line, so it is best to locate this layer first and work forward to the foreground. Most plant compositions are viewed from one or two vantage points, with the ground layer and foreground plants being closest to the viewer, the midground plants behind the foreground plants, and the background plants farthest from the viewer. The composition is often more interesting if a few tall plants are added to the foreground or midground layer.

Massing plants within layers is essential for creating a cohesive and unified look. Cluster similar individual plants by planting them close enough so they touch when fully mature. Overlap masses of different plants so there is maximum interface between each. Vary the shape of the masses, using larger masses when using fewer plants and smaller masses when using a greater variety of plants. Vary the size of the masses, particularly those that are adjacent.

The size of the plant does not have to dictate the size of the mass. Use masses of identical size and shape only when flanking both sides of an object or creating symmetry on both sides of an axis in a formal garden. Base the size of the massings on the overall size of the site, as viewing distance changes the perception of the size of the masses. Smaller masses with fewer plants work well in small courtyards because the plants are viewed close up and individual plants stand out more.

  • Unique and one of a kind – I appreciate your creativity and follow through with projects using unique media in it’s creation. Ignore the criticism of unintelligent yet talkative trolls. The people who complain the most are probably hitting zero in regards to productivity of their own creation. I suppose when you read nasty comments you can count your blessings – You are lucky to have intelligence, compassion and creativity which trumps them by three

  • People are so cruel on social media. I thought this was very creative and I enjoyed perusal the process. My only question is, how long does the umbrella last beneath before it begins to visibly deteriorate and what do you do at that point? Or, have you not gotten to that point yet? 😅 Either way, very creating and pretty!

  • 💙 Very creative and looks lovely, but if you are going to put fish in it, that amount is too many for size of pond, also you either need to seal the cement to stop chemicals seeping out into the water or the concrete needs weeks to cure, keep it filled with water, then before use, flush out with clean water a few times.

  • Without the fish ( biological control ), this would be a mosquito magnet. The goldfish might be too big, but the small fish, either they are guppies or Gambusia affinnis ( mosquito fish ) are perfect for this habitat. They can tolerate extreme conditions and it seems that the person is feeding them. If the yearly temperature in this article is on the warmer side, these fish can last for years.

  • Why people nowadays tend to be so negative and say it, so rudely is a sign of our society needing an overhaul. People need to learn that you can balance critiquing/criticism with kindness people. Listen to you better when you do it that way. Now that said, obviously, there is some fatal flaws to the man’s design, but it’s not unfixable easily fixed. Just gonna have to incorporate some solar technology into it. Of course you can’t have the fountain directly in the sun. If you’re going to have fish, you have to run the line to the panel that is sitting in the sun. There’s one thing I don’t understand is the blue hose that you put on the bottom tier I look toward the left in the back and it look like it’s pushing water like somethings moving, I don’t know what that is if it’s my bad eyesight lol but aeration is extremely important even for plants and filtering unless you plan on taking a scooper and pulling that water out every three days and ready for polishing it with water you’re gonna have to find a way to filter it as well. Once the plants are establish, they can probably do a lot of the filtering on the fish would do a lot of the Fertilization like a hydroponics situation. But overall idea is very creative and awesome especially if you live in an area that doesn’t get a lot of electricity and modern conveniences. I say bravo just fix the flaws. You’ve given me a few ideas that I didn’t have before perusal it. Gonna take a little bit of engineering but you can fix it or if you find it works for you then bravo as well.

  • I mean i get the concept but those fish are going to die because yhe cement wasn’t coated with something that would make it non toxic. Plus it needs aeration. Standing water in cement actually causes erosion..but the concept would work beautifully for a flower pot jusy need some straws for the drain holes.

  • I Marked A QF 150👍Ups, For The Time Being, But, Will Be Back For More, Sooh, Please, Be Happy With This For Now, Cuz, I Have Medicals, And Appts, Too, Sooh, This Is With Mine This And The Main Entitlement Page And Every Single One Here Of Other S’rS Saturday May 25, 24 @ 10:41 a.m. Std E Time. • Good decorative project until the addition of anything organic. Adding water to fresh concrete creates a high alkaline PH level that not only will kill fish it will also kill plants. Disturbing to see this project here without a warning. We learned the hard way that chemicals were necessary to sustain life to avoid the alkaline deaths.

  • Cement, in itself, is not waterproof. It mixes with water to form a cement paste that binds aggregates in various construction mixes like concrete, mortar and plaster. However, you can add admixtures or additives that possess water resistant properties that make the final mix water resistant when it hardens. If you are going to make DIY articles, atleast make them decent!!!
