How To Properly Water Roses?

Rose experts advise on how to water rose plants in the backyard to ensure their fragrant blooms thrive during spring and summer. The best time to water roses is early in the day, at ground level, to prevent diseases and maximize absorption. Use a soaker hose or drip irrigation system to water at the roots, avoiding wet leaves.

Watering roses early in the day allows water to soak into the soil and roots before the warmest part of the day. Avoid watering over flowers or foliage, as it can encourage disease problems. In temperate climates, weekly watering is usually enough, with two inches of water per week (4 to 5 gallons) needed. Water roses once a week with 1 to 2 inches of water from early spring through fall. In summer heat, aim to water 2 to 3 times a week to keep the soil moist.

Growing roses requires about 1 to 2 inches of water per week in a single watering session from early spring through fall. Increase the frequency to every three or four days. Plants in the landscape need about 1 inch of water per week, double that during the hottest months. To keep it easy, pick a day of the week when watering is most convenient.

When watering rose bushes, ensure they are well watered/hydrated before applying any pesticide. Water as needed using 3-5 gallons of water per rose bush, dependent on their size. Gradually increase the length of time between waterings to encourage the growth of the plant.
