How To Keep Peony Tubers Fresh?

To plant peony tubers, choose the right soil for optimal results. Peonies thrive in well-draining, organic matter-rich, and slightly acidic soils. Loosen the soil to a depth of 8-10 inches with a rake and store them in the refrigerator for up to three weeks. Choose the right location for planting, ensuring the buds are not more than 2 inches under the soil. If temperatures are fairly even, store pieces in peat.

When storing peonies in the refrigerator, know when to cut them and how to properly store them. Use the Hori Hori or dividing knife to separate the tubers, ensuring each segment has 3-5 eyes that will grow into next year’s shoots. Immediate replanting is essential, so dig a hole deep in the chosen site. Purchase peony roots in early fall before the first frost, as they require deep root development before they can bloom. Water the soil deeply and thoroughly, spread a 2-to-3 inch layer of coarse, organic mulch over the planting bed, and fertilize the peonies once each year in spring.

If you don’t have time to plant immediately, keep the peony roots in their original bags at 40°F (5°C) for no longer than three weeks. Quick planting will give the best results. Insulate the roots with packing peanuts or other material and store the potted peonies until next spring.

Store unplanted peony roots in a cardboard box large enough to hold all roots without touching one another. Stems should be placed in water to reach maximum moisture contents and left to dry in cold storage (2-3°C). Store roots in barely damp peat moss and keep them cool.
