How To Irrigate Plants Without Using String?

This article provides a guide on how to create a water-wicking system for pot plants while away on vacation. The method involves placing one end of a thick string or rope in the soil and the other end in a large container filled with water. A weight is placed on the end to prevent floating and the container is placed above the plant to facilitate water travel. The rope is then placed in the soil, about 1 to 2 inches down, and the other end in the pot. The string should be on a downward slope to allow water to travel from the bowl to the plant.

There are several ways to water plants while away, including using empty wine bottles, string drip systems, and cork self-watering containers. String drip systems can be used in extremely dry soil, but it may not work in extremely dry soil. Instead, water the soil beforehand to avoid this issue.

The glass bottle method is ideal for small plants and many glass bottles with metal screw caps. Wine bottles with aluminum caps are ideal for this method. To water plants with string, gather all plants around a water container and cut yarn or fabric strips into suitable pieces. Place one end in the water and the other in the soil, then bury the other end of the string into each plant’s soil.

A practical solution is to use glass globes that dispense water when the soil gets dry deep down. A simple watering system for indoor plants using cotton string as an ingenious “wick” can keep pot plants watered for 1 to 3 weeks.
