How To Irrigate Newly Planted Trees?

Water newly-planted trees thoroughly before planting, at planting time, and the day after planting to settle the soil and remove large air pockets. Water daily for the first week, then twice a week for the next two weeks. Water once a day for the first couple of weeks after planting and once a week during the growing season. New trees require more frequent watering than established trees and shrubs. Watering should be done at planting time and at intervals of 1-2 weeks after planting, daily, and every 2 to 3 days for 3-12 weeks. Watering cans with a rose attachment or sprinklers should be used for the initial two or three growing seasons. Water once every other day for two weeks following planting, then 2-3 times a week until the dormant season. Irrigate a newly-planted tree with 2 to 3 gallons of water per inch of its trunk diameter. A thorough watering every 7 to 14 days (in dry weather) should be sufficient 4 to 5 weeks after planting. It is recommended to give 50 liters of water per week during the summer months for the first three years after planting.
