How To Hydrate Succulents Outside?

Succulents are unique plants that require a decent amount of water every week, especially during the summer and in warmer climates. To water them, test the soil’s moisture level and use a watering can or a pot with a drainage hole. Some plants go dormant over winter and require little or no water, while others continue to grow and need watering as often as once a week.

There are two common methods for watering succulents: top and bottom watering. However, it is important to avoid watering the leaves, as they can be a nemesis to rotting plants. The best way to water is by waiting until the soil dries out completely and then watering deeply.

The “soak and dry” method is the best approach for watering succulent plants. Soak the soil completely and let it dry before watering again. Succulent plants should be in well-draining soil in a pot with a drainage hole. Watering should be about once a week in summer and once a month in winter.

Succulent leaves are plump because they store water in their stems. A general rule of thumb is to continue watering until water starts to come out of the bottom of the pot. Deep watering will promote healthy roots.

Succulents need more water in early spring when the plant starts actively growing. Water needs may lessen in the summer and even more so during winter. Water your succulents every other week during non-winter months when temperatures are above 40 degrees. Water the plant until water escapes from the drainage hole(s) into the saucer beneath, empty the saucer, and check on the plant one week later.
