To get tulips to rebloom, choose wisely when choosing botanical species, cultivated varieties of species, or hybrids bred for naturalization. Deadhead spent blooms, ensure adequate drainage, fertilize appropriately, foil herbivores, leave leaves alone, lift bulbs, provide cold storage, and plant them in a well-drained area.
Some tulips have been cultivated specifically to help them behave like perennials. To encourage repeat blooms, follow these simple guidelines:
Choose the right type of bulb in the beginning. Some tulips have been cultivated specifically to help them behave like perennials.
Deadhead sown blooms by removing seed heads once the blooms have faded. Allow the stems and foliage to die back naturally. Plant the bulbs in a sunny spot in autumn, allowing them to be “baked” during the summer.
Leave the leaves in the ground to compost and feed the bulbs. In the spring, clip off the flower heads and allow the green foliage to die back.
Plant the tulip bulb in the fall at a depth of approximately two to tree times its height in sandy or well-drained soil, water it, and rake the soil surface smooth.
Rake the soil surface smooth. Build a temporary raised bed on top of the soil and place the bulbs in the raised bed, like eggs in a carton. If you get greenery but no flowers, try digging them out, adding bulb tone, or moving to a drier sunnjer spot.
Choose a sunny area to plant your bulbs deep (about 10-15cm) to give them a better chance of coming back. Cut them annually after they’ve bloomed. Fill a vase with water until it comes just 1 inch from the bottom of the bulb and move the bulb and vase to a cool dark location for 4 to 6 weeks.
