Vacations are meant to be a break from everyday life, so it’s important to take care of your orchids while you’re away. Here are some steps you can take to ensure your orchids receive the best care:

  1. Water your orchids before you leave: If you’re taking a short two to four day vacation away from home, your orchids should be fine.
  2. Enlist a friend or family member: If you’re going on an extended vacation lasting several weeks, your orchids may need more than one watering.
  3. Maintain optimal temperature, light, and humidity: Keep the bugs away.
  4. Keep the orchids in the best spot: Place your orchids in the best spot and use a self-watering system to keep them happy.
  5. Keep the orchids in a cool, dry place: Avoid leaving them in hot, humid conditions, as this can cause damage to their roots.
  6. Keep the orchids away from the sun: If you’re going on a long vacation, you may need to water your orchids more frequently.

  • I used to ask my mom to come water my phals (~70, mostly summer bloomers) when I’m away for more than a week in the summer. I have been coming back to bacterial infections and necroses on the youngest leaves, because of the stale air and abundant watering. I quit that and now I ask her to stop by every now and then to open windows and even switch on AC on the hottest days. My lesson learned – phals do fine without water, and they’d appreciate more if they can be offered some ventilation instead.

  • I can attest to not having someone care for your orchid. Even with strict, written instructions eight of ten orchids were a pile of goo. 🌱 Self-watering with a wick…I found that the air gap between the water reservoir and the plant-pot needs to be closed or minimized so the water in the wick doesn’t evaporate into the air….so your version of the plant-pot sitting directly atop of the reservoir works best. • Great topic!

  • When I go on holiday for 2 weeks I tend to fill my bath up with several inch’s of water with a couple of pumps of orchid feed mixed in the water and soak them for like a hour or so then leave them to drain for a couple of hours then put them back . I find that works amazing for my plants . I’ve don’t that for the past 3 years and my orchids are really happy

  • I’m perusal your articles for a while, i have some very big orchids that tend to go dry more often than i like. (I have to water them 2-3 times a week in summer, instead of just one) and i was thinking about switching to semi-hydro. I was wandering what’s your oldest orchid in semi-hydro. My oldest phalaenopsis is now 6 years old and has 12 leaves, so I know it likes the traditional growing method, but it would be nice not be around them all the time watering 😂😂😂 Moving them back and fort from the sink every 2-3 days it’s a bit too much for me. Thank you 🙂

  • hi Danny this episode could not have come more timely as I am leaving tomorrow and practically was losing sleep over them. I do have my kind neighbor keeping an eye but I still have one question that is tormenting me. I have windows almost to all directions and my phals stay on eastern window at all times but I move my cattleyas and vandas from eastern window to southern window for the day and I bring them back to Eastern for the sunset hours(this NYC 5th fl apt) . if I can only choose one window for them given your water hacks. which windows are the move for little less than one month away? prolonged mild morning and sunset or shorter period but super bright mid day sun? I hope I hear from you bye tomorrow afternoon!! thank you so much 🤗
