To arrange carnations in a vase for a floral centerpiece, follow these steps:
- Choose the right vase: Opt for a vase with a narrow neck and wide base to showcase the beauty of your carnations.
- Prepare the carnations: Before arranging the carnations, it is important to prepare them properly.
- Create a base layer: Start arranging the carnations by creating a layer of flowers.
- Start arranging the carnations: A dome of carnations delivers a dramatic display that is both fun and simple in elegance. For a lower profile, this can be done in a bowl with a flower frog.
- Start arranging the carnations: Elevated centerpieces add drama to a space and are on-trend. Long farm tables, often called feasting tables, are also on-trend.
To make a natural arrangement, measure where you want to cut the carnation stems by placing it alongside the vase. It is better to cut your stems at a 45-degree angle and above the nodule. Trim the leaves so that there are none below the vase’s waterline.
Carnations are beautiful and versatile flowers that can transform any space in your home. They can be used as a centerpiece for special occasions or simply to enjoy fresh flowers. Use a sharp pair of floral shears for a clean cut and trim each carnation slightly taller than the vase. Trim the leaves so that there are none below the vase’s waterline.

How do you stabilize a tall vase?
To prevent a vase from tipping over, pour fine sand or pebbles at the bottom to lower the center of gravity, making it more stable and less likely to topple over. A narrow and tall vase requires less force to topple, while a wide bottom usually doesn’t. To keep the sand or pebbles clean, store them in a Ziploc bag or use a translucent vase. Arrange flowers in the center of the vase to maintain stability. Place the vase in an out-of-the-way spot, such as corners or between furniture and the wall, to prevent accidental bumping and topple over.
How do you perk up carnations?
To rehydrate desiccated flowers, combine three teaspoons of sugar with lukewarm water in a vase and allow the solution to rest. A few drops of the solution should be applied directly to the flower’s head. This method may be employed with one bloom or the entire bouquet. The addition of sugar to the water will enhance the vitality of the stems, allowing the flowers to rest in a nourishing environment.

Why do carnations have a bad reputation?
The carnation, a ruffly flower often found in grocery stores, is a controversial flower with many opposing its use in arrangements. However, there are reasons for giving carnations a second chance. They can last an average of 14 to 21 days with proper care. The human usage of carnations dates back to ancient times, with Greeks and Romans using them in sacred ceremonies and fashion. They were attributed to their gods, making them the “flower of the gods” and “Jupiter’s flower”. Their unique beauty and reverence made carnations a favorite in ancient times, a departure from the modern “cheap flower” perception. Care for cut carnations is essential for their longevity.

What to do if flowers are too tall for vase?
To create a rounded, multi-level arrangement of flowers, separate a fifth of the flowers and cut them around one to two inches shorter than the rest. Place the longer flowers in the vase and surround the outer rim with the shorter flowers. This creates a more rounded arrangement that doesn’t just look like your favorite vase with long stems and a poof of flower blooms at the top. Pull out extras to cut shorter and fill any holes. This technique is especially helpful for those who have never hosted a floral event and works well when mixing different flower types into one vase. Remember to vary the lengths of each type.
How do you display tall vases?
In order to enhance the aesthetic appeal of a tall vase, it is recommended that the vase be filled with tall branches, dried flowers, or foliage. This combination will provide the vase with a sense of height and elegance. Such an arrangement may be further enhanced by pairing it with a modern painting, thereby creating a harmonious and unified aesthetic. The vase should be selected to complement or contrast with the dominant colors in the painting, thereby enhancing the overall texture and color scheme and creating unity.
How to make carnations look expensive?
To open carnations, gently peel back the green “V” (sepal) around the base of the bloom and use your fingers to press the petals out, feathering them for a larger and more beautiful appearance. This trick can be applied to other flowers, such as tulips, to transform them into stunning tropicals. To make a bouquet look expensive, mix different types of flowers together, arranging them with smaller buds, larger focal blooms, and plenty of greenery to frame them.

Carnations are long-lasting cut flowers that can remain fresh for 7-14 days. To maximize vase life, follow these simple care tips:
- Arrange stems to your liking, varying their height and position. Add other flowers to the arrangement once all the roses are positioned.
- Change the water if it starts looking cloudy and rinse the stems clean. Recut the stems under water to help the flower uptake water.
- Carnations are an excellent cut flower with true staying power, outlasting most others in a vase, bouquet, or boutonniere. They can also be edible, used as decorations on cakes, added to salads for color, or frozen in ice cubes for a festive cocktail.

This is why you are the best for tutorials… I am almost embarrassed to say I have NEVER thought of building structure for my vases of flowers in the home 😱🤪. I’ve always used greenery but obviously never enough to create such a Professional look. And the tip for making on one and transferring to final clean water is one I will continue to use. As always, Thank you

my dearest Mr. MacDonald, thank you so much for your wonderful tutorials! I find each one to be educational, entertaining, and inspiring. and I appreciate your kind manner and the way to treat each flower with respect. here is my request, or challenge if you prefer; I’d love to see you make an arrangement with only flowers. by that I mean no branches, leaves, or fillers. no wax flower or dusty miller or even grasses. I’m very excited to see what you design because I know it will be brilliant! thank you for your time. mt p.s. my favorite design is the summer arrangement you made with poppies, astilbe, and hydrangeas. I think I’ve watched that article 20 times! love, love, love it!!! mt
Very very beautiful ! Thank you for fulfilling my request for a vase arrangement. After I design a vase arrangement I often place river rocks or colored pebbles at the bottom of the vase to disguise the stems or after arranging the flowers in the vase i bundle the bouquet in my hand removing it from the vase wrapping a large aspidistra leaf around the stems then placing the bouquet in an empty vase then filling with water which makes the leaf adhere to the vase disguising the stems. Tip….the combination of the river rocks & the aspidistra leaf makes for a very beautiful vase arrangement as well. Again thank for sharing this wonderful tutorial, flowers always soothes the mind, body & soul! 👍🌹🌿
John, your arrangements are so diverse. Salal sets the stage perfectly! I am a huge fan of hypericum & Craspedia so I love that. Even though they are ‘fillers’ they add texture & whimsy. I don’t think I’ve ever seen green carnations (except the cheesy dyed ones on St. Pat’s day). I like carnations mostly for their subtle perfume but they fill out any bouquet. This is exceptional, as always. Thank you for sharing your talent.
I’ve recently come across your articles and have been binge perusal – sooo much information and tips on what you’re creating. And everyone of them is awesome. I’m hoping to do some flowers for our granddaughter’s wedding next year, and maybe even attempting her bouquet. You are so inspirational. Thanks for sharing your talent, much appreciated!
Congrats for your art, thank you indeed, making my first steps(you are like my father on this! a real inspiration… having problems with vase shaped rounded on the top (as well as on its base, not like yours in this tutorial, smaller hole, but very similar in size ), placed in between a wooden wall and a narrrow space also wooden, how can I make an arrangement that doesnt go so wide, dont know if you can get the idea… flowers should not stay in the back because they cannot appreciated by the time they keep tight between the wooden wall…it has to be quite flat at the back. It´s for an altar (SSacramentum ) in a church. Thanks for your outstanding work! God bless you!
can my flower stems float above the cylinder vase, or is it too much pressure on the flowers. I got a bouquet and the flowers are tied together with string at the bottom and the bottom of the stems do not touch the bottom of the vase, but the more I cut the stems the shorter it is, and the further the stems are from the bottom of the vase… please help, first time caring for flowers .. thanks
