How To Cultivate Orchids In Florida On Trees?

Orchids can be grown on trees in various tropical regions, including Hawaii, the Caribbean, and USDA Zone 11 of the continental United States. In Florida, orchids can be grown on trees using ties and observing their preferences for sun and moisture. Some orchids are epiphytes, not parasites, and care for them after mounting is essential.

In South Florida, you can grow terrestrial or epiphytic orchids, particularly those native to Florida. For North or Central Florida, you will be limited to terrestrial plants. Choose horizontal limbs with shade from the afternoon sun or plant directly on the trunks, preferably on the side of the tree. The best trees for orchids have bark that has good texture and is “groovy”, providing a place for the seed to nestle and be protected.

Orchids require air and water, but fertilizing monthly during the growing period can enhance active growth. Wild orchids grow in various habitats, and tree-attached orchids, or epiphytic orchids, are found in the subtropical part of Florida, mostly in the Everglades. Orchids can be attached to trees using various methods, such as attaching the orchid to a tree limb and secureing it with biodegradable twine.

Even novice gardeners can grow orchids in trees, and following the basic steps will ensure success. They do require some water, but mostly hang in the tree and enjoy. The heat of summer can also harm some types of orchids.
