How To Care For Houseplants With Leca Balls?

LECA balls are made from pre-treated clay that is fired in a kiln at high temperatures and then cooled down. These porous, man-made materials help with aeration and drainage when used with soil. They can be used as a soil additive or on its own as an alternative substrate to soil. LECA balls provide excellent aeration and drainage for plant roots, reducing the risk of root rot.

To grow houseplants in LECA, fill ⅓ of your pot with presoaked leca balls, add the plant, and fill with the rest of the leca securing the plant. Place the inner pot in the outer pot or deep saucer if using a nursery pot where you will be watering the plant. LECA can even be added on top of soil to protect your indoor plants.

After a rinse and 24 hour soak, put the Leca in a pot and fill water to the same level as the top of the Leca. Boil for at least 10 minutes. Soak the LECA for 24 hours using tap water or hose water. For extra lazy mode, let the LECA soak for 24 hours using tap water or hose water.

A simple trick is to fill the pot 3/4 full with LECA and then submerge it in water. Place the plants and lift the whole pot up simultaneously. Try to provide the right amount of water by soaking the LECA for 24 hours and allowing it to dry completely.

In conclusion, LECA balls are a versatile growing medium that provides excellent aeration and drainage for plant roots. They can be used as soil additives or on their own as an alternative substrate to soil.
