  • The round magnet in pot A is acting as a moisture retainer/evaporation barrier and thermal conductor like any rock of that size and dark color would. The seed in pot B germinated faster than pot C because the red pot color absorbs more heat than the reflective white color of pot C. If the pots are labeled A, B, and C, then there is no reason to use a different color for the control pot.

  • First, all the pots should be the same color, as it can impact the temperature of the soil. A journal recording water measurements, temperature, and sunlight exposure duration would be helpful for other scientists that would like to replicate this experiment. To make this experiment more respectable you need to expand the number of samples. 30 of each A, B, And C would provide sufficient data to create a control chart and regression equations. Next, I would expand the variation on sunlight and water in future experiments. I give this two thumbs up.

  • Needs to be done with more samples and identify the direction of polarities relative to the seed. Maybe Use a ziplock bag so the seeds don’t come in contact with the magnet ruling out any possible nutrient absorption. This experiment does work but needs to be done carefully.   • Pretty good! The first time I heard of this effect was in 1981 from a friend of mine. Then I heard about that a second time in 1982 from my Professor of Electricity and Magnetism. Then, later on, a classmate of mine, inspired by the Professor, did some experiments with that and confirmed this effect. I never read any paper about it but I presume that the ions in the plant that create an electric current are affected by the magnetic field in a benefic way: just like a charged particle in motion experiments a magnetic force.   • This is indeed an interesting experiment. Some suggest that in Pot A, the manget itself helped retain water. I would suggest placing the magnet at the bottom of the container, underneath the level of the seed (and place the magnets in Pot B at the same depth for sake of comparison). In Pot B you had all of the magnets placed with same polarity facing each other. There should be another pot (Pot C) with similar placement, but opposite polarities facing each other, thus creating a flow of electrons (in theory), to see if that makes a difference. I agree with others who suggest this needs to be done at larger scale for more statistically significant results. I would recommend doing 10 pots of each. For simplicity’s sake, I would start with Pot A as the control, then Pot B with the ring magnet, then Pots C&D with paired flat magnets on opposite sides.

I got this idea because when I was playing around with multimeter I put the terminals on the plant and could see voltage in range of 50-100 millivolts . That is when I realised electricity and magnetism should have some effect on the plant .

  • I am intrigued by this. Is there pole direction that yields the best results? Does the magnet need to be above or below to surface of the soil? Is there a specific type of magnet that works best? What is the optimal strength of magnet? I have come across similar devices used on vehicle fuel lines to increase economy by aligning the molecular structure of the gas or diesel. They were not very successful.

  • Thanks for the article, very interesting.. would love to see this experiment with objects that have a paramagnetic field and diamagnetic field, Theirs a hypothesis with the old Celts towers in Ireland that found all the crops near it grew faster, stronger and overall more healthier. It’s something to do with the geometry of the tower and the materials used which have paramagnetic and diamagnetic fields. Also true for most ancient pyramids, look up Callahan Celt towers if interested 🤙

  • As a small scale commercial grower I start many of my plants from seed. I have observed that if I plant a tray of say 20 seedlings there is a natural variation between them. You would need to repeat the test simultaneouslying with a higher number of say, at least ten seedlings in each of the three groups to begin to insulate your results from such variations. Further, and for your information, the test would be best done with all batches of comparative groups started simultaneously as there is another naturally occurring variation, that of the lunar effect of seed germination. – (see ‘Biodynamic Agriculture Introductory Lectures – Alex Podolinski: Vol. 1 & 2).   • To be honest, the sprout within the ring magnet does have very nice, uniform and healthy looking growth. It would be interesting to see if a regular ring of metal would have the same results. But if you think about magnetism and how it can affect humans, I’m sure that it may have an effect on plant life as well. I will repeat this experiment with 5 pots per type of magnet, and also include another 5 pots with a regular piece of round metal. It may not happen right away but I’ll post the results after I do this. It’s an interesting experiment, no matter the outcome. Oh, and I’m going to keep all of the pots a consistent color as well, because color can have a large impact on temperature and moisture.   • 3:28 Minerals… It’s because of the effect of magnet on the minerals, the minerals can be ferro magnetic (magnetic force attracting iron), para magnetic (slightly attracted to magnets) and dia magnetic (slightly repelled by magnets). Now the minerals are carried to upwards to all the parts of the plant especially to those places where young cells are present in high density, it does it by the help of capillary force through the Xylem and Phloem, what a perfectly oriented magnetic field does is that it adds a magnetic component of force to the already present capillary force from the roots in the soil and going upwards to all the parts of the shoot system, the only downside is that minerals which are dia magnetic will get pushed backwards thus capillary force will struggle to move them upwards through the ducts, thus it may result in a plant slightly lacking some minerals, but still it should grow more because most of the minerals are para magnetic and ferro magnetic.

  • My guess is that it works because water is a polar molecule with a positive side and negative side. I wonder if the magnetic field somehow aligns the water molecules so that they are more readily absorbed by the plant. In other words, the magnetic field makes the water more hydrating for the plant somehow.

  • You could only make this solid if you know that each seed has the exact same genetics which you cant, so multiple runs of this test with the same genetic profile would be necessary to see if the magnet makes a difference, not saying it doesn’t but at the same time It could be coincidence with the genetic profile of the seeds 🙂

  • Arrange bar magnets in an outer circle N to S all around instead of upright, and see if results are the same as the block circle magnet. 🙂 I agree with another commenter: Faster might not necessarily be better. Living beings need time + circumstance to develop as structurally consistent as their peers. 🙂

  • Quite a few years back I was contemplating the same thesis and I talked to a friend about my ideal and let me broaden the scope there a little bit your plants if you know how it can manipulate magnetic fields and the plant is able to control certain aspects of that would the plant be able to communicate that if it wants more water more nutrient or what kind of nutrient and control of what kind of like it likes it might want more sun then some or a particular wavelength light frequency and the plant will be able to communicate on its own kind of underground switchboard to be able to communicate this to an AI or a drone to be able to feed itself and change its environment

  • If you haven’t, you should check out the book Paramagnetism by Philip Callahan. He has laid out data as to how paramagnetic rocks energize the soil and can influence the health of plants. I’ve repeated his experiments and it works and is fun to do. It has to do with the relationship between the paramagnetic properties of the soil and the diamagnetic properties of the plants that create that spark. Just by placing a piece of rock with paramagnetic properties in the soil and planting around it, combined with the path of sunlight, it’s easy to predict the flow of energy and which plants will grow the strongest etc. Happy hunting!

  • Perhaps the magnetic field isn’t what’s effecting the plants improvement, but the cover it provides the soil to retain more moisture from evaporating. Cut a flat piece of plastic the same inner and outer diameter of the round magnetic and place it exactly the same way on another plant. Might have to do several of each for an accurate comparison.

  • Hello. In Germany there is a good man with the youtube website BaumMentor Baumpflege. He knows a lot about the history and the effects of elektrokultur. His tests showed that a neodymmagnet isn’t so good. So he use ferrit ring magnets. He put a metallstring through the magnets. It works till 100 meters. Now he looks where the nortpole is, because you put the string in line of south north. The magnet is on the south and so you use the power of the magnetism which goes through the line from the south to nortpole. But before you put it in the earth, 5 to 30 cm, you have to put beewax on the magnet because of the protection of rust. And bee wax let the magnetism flow. Til 50 cm to string, left and right of it, you have the effects of this. If you want to use this in a pot, you have to ground the string. Better for pots are the copper ring. Use a copper ring. The end of the copper have to overlay a little bit. And the open ring must lay to the north pole. At the back the ring has to be a little bit higher than the open overlaying end. You use sticks to hold the copper ring in the pot.

Farmers use this device similar but it is connected to water pipes on the inside of it negative and positive and for some reason it makes the crops bigger farmers in Australia have proven the water device with water going through it before it hits the plant.   • Interesting experiment but a few problems I see. One is you would have better control if you used a non-magnetic shape having similar properties, such as density and thermal conductivity as the magnet. Two, there is a lot of variability from seed to seed so you would either need to repeatedly run the same experiment or run more plants at the same time, multiple in each test condition. It very well may be that the result you saw was nothing more than occluding the surface of the soil to reduce evaporation, making soil moisture more stable and possibly even a bit warmer from reduced evaporation. And if you did want to grow plants on out this way, you should coat the magnet so it doesnt deteriorate in moist soil. Spray paint should be ok, a coat of epoxy even better. That said, your article is still getting views 3 years later, I would say your experiment is a success!

  • First of all, great article. After seeing the results, I have a theory. The round magnet may have a better result because more water was concentrated at the center, and the bottom surface of the round magnet could have been moist, giving experiment (A) a sufficient source of water compared to the others. It would be great if you can revisit the experiment and have the same round shape with other materials. This should confirm if magnets really do have an effect on plants.   • you seem like a person who likes to learn, explore, experiment, here’s one, my assertion is, permanent magnet stationary levitation is fairly easy, if one treats the magnetic field the same as any other mediums, water, air, in this attempted ARENA stated above we have been mislead, less power is the key, to create a thin weak magnetic surface, that acts against a surface resistance over another magnetic field, a stronger magnet in the center may help with the whole, basically you create the equivalent of the field. created in the “Levitron spinning top devices seen here” but with a slightly different modality to the end. also how about redoing this tests set with more results to seek truths from, to weed out variable’s, but please understand. next would love to see N & S poles checked, tested, of various fields strengths, is to much of a magnetic field bad, also just a crazy thought what hemisphere do you live, all the positive “S” pole stuff I see is all tested in northern hemisphere, would love to see some comparisons … thanks

  • Interesting subject, I’ll tell you 🤔 what I think is the reason that ( A) grew larger faster, so… as it goes, a plant gets its water drawn up into the plant, and it does this from the suns activity which makes the nourishment for the plants growth to occure faster by photosynthesis. But… here’s what I believe, it is known that water is magnetic, so I think that, when you put that magnet in the ground, you happened to get its polarity right, and so, I think the magnet kept forcing fluids up into the plant making it larger faster, in the same way as photosynthesis but more because the sun was also involved. What do I know 🤔.

  • From reading research. There are papers that claim no effect and papers that claim many effects but differ by species. Now I do not know about the magnetic effect on cells in the plant but it would effect ions in the soil. It would take a ton of samples and control to really sus it out. Also, I wonder about fogponic transducers and ion or nutrated water. Water is paramagnetic, fertilizers ions are charged and it may be possible to direct the flow of ions to feed the roots with magnets to increase efficiency of fogapolics for things like space travel.

  • Really it works, in six months my citrus it’s about 50 cms… don’t know what kind of citrus is, the seed came into a bag of dirt I bought a year ago, I used the dirt to refill a container with a papaya tree and suddenly a citrus born, I introduced a piece of wire and a really tiny neodymium magnet and placed on the wire (negative side to the wire) incredibly it’s about 3 feet tall since last October

  • If you drink magnetic water it acts as a tonic. It increase the iron and the oxygen in yr blood. I used them in healing.   • The thing is with plants they are basically pumping systems and the direction of flow of water creates electrical effect and this interacts with the magnetic field. You can magnetise wood in this way by getting the plant to be in the presence of magnets. Particularly if you feed the plant iron filings as it is growing. These in minute particles then align in the same pattern as a north south polarity.

  • we would really need to see the plant after a longer period of time to determine if a faster starting growth vs slower starting growth leads to a healthier plant outcome in the long term. Also how it affects any flowering / seeds / fruits etc In other words, is there a benefit to a slower germination that is being overlooked with the bias that faster is better…

  • You actually need 2 more controls. For the magnet ring, you should have an inert material of similar shape and density. Maybe a round flat stone with a hole of similar size. For the random magnet bits, some stone pebbles would do. My hypothesis is that the magnet ring was just helping keep moisture in.

  • I think, after you give water on the soil, the dissolved compouınds which are affected by magnets are hold close to the seed. So the seed could manage to find more ability to get fed. you can make this experiment with the period conclusion. I mean, you can leave the magnet till you see the sprout and take it out. And compare it with the pot which still has magnet inside. Will you see an significant difference between both. Or they will grow close to each other. If the second choice that I tell you is correct, then you can use these magnets for other seeds. So once you get the magnetic dissolved compounds close to the seed then,you can suppose that these compounds do not go somewhere else after you take the magnet out.

  • The magnet is not having a direct effect on the plant itself. The effect of the magnetism is on the water the plant is drinking. Also, the water contained within the plant. There is chaos in a 16.9 FL OZ bottle of water. We have 1 large oxygen molecule and two small hydrogen molecules. In a non-magnetized bottle of water those hydrogen molecules are facing all different directions. If we were to take two strong magnets with a narrow field (like the round permanent magnet in the article) and tape them to a water bottle, with the south poles facing each other on either side of the bottle, we can put a positively charged magnetic force onto the molecules. This causes order to the chaos, the hydrogen atoms begin to face the same direction after 12-24 hours of exposure. The water will hold its magnetism for 24-48 hours. The more powerful the magnet the stronger and quicker the reaction. Feed your plants with magnetized water every time you water and you will see the same results as you saw in plant A.   • My theory is that the magnets are affecting small microscopic bits of magnetic materials within the soil. It may be the case that the magnets encourage the gradual igration of magnetic nanoparticles through the soil, and as this motion occurs it also causes the motion of other minerals as a second-hand effect. Thus becomes easier for the roots to grab nutrients from a volume of soil that has this sort of nanoparticle motion going on; like a sponge in the ocean is fed particles in the water as the current moves through it.

  • You are basically structuring the water – this means you are converting it from h2o into h3o2. (a snowflake is h3o2) Because water is diamagnetic an h2o joins with another h2o and liberates a hydrogen atom in the process.H3o2 is the water in our cells and in the cells of plants. Roots convert the water because they are hydrophilic. H3o2 has magnetic properties its self and that is how osmosis works. H3o2 will hydrate the plant or human because of its magnetic properties.

I’m only concerned if people started placing magnets all the time because plants, fruits and vegetables are all living existences too and with each influence we place upon them they change the way they behave and evolve. An example is hybrid fruits and vegetables where people intentionally hybrid to produce a better tasting fruit or vegetable. An opposite example is the importance of people saving particular lineage seeds to constantly produce a traditional fruit or vegetable. I feel very deeply about affecting their growth in this un natural / natural way. Yes it’s a natural magnet but that is what the earth is and we shouldn’t reprogram the vegetables or fruits. I believe it is because of the electromagnetic energy being emmited from the chemical reactions and the transfer of electrons within the plant are resting to the exterior magnetic field in such a way where it may be speeding up the process or allowing the plant to build itself a lot stronger due to the constant force being applied from the magnet!!

  • there is a bit of a flaw with this experiment, and that being that pot C is a different color… to be a true control it should also be the same color… especially since white reflects sunlight, keeping the soil slightly cooler while red, being a darker color will absorb more and conduct the warmth to the soil which helps in germination and seedling growth

  • because every living thing has a magnetic field around it so when you put the magnet up against the seed it causes frequency or friction shall we call it from the electricity moving through out the magnet it’s gaining heat and momentum that’s what starts your germination effect quicker!   • Для вменяемого эксперимента необходимы испытания на группах. Хотя-бы по 10 растений в каждой группе. Когда растения по одному есть вероятность что просто разного качества сами семена оказались. И результат будет в итоге не объективен. По нормальному нужно много растений и оценивать по средним показателям в каждой группе. Ну и доводить растения до плодоношения имеет смысл, а то не известно ещё что будет из того который стартонул быстрее всех. Иногда такие в итоге и откидываются. Но в целом опыт интересный. И что-то подобное я помню у меня дед проводил ещё в 90-х. Но он держал воду в магнитном поле, потом ей поливал. Это проще. И тоже эффект был подобный. Кстати эти магниты не сильные как заявлено. Неодимовые магниты намного сильнее. Это если сила воздействия имеет значение конечно. А то предположу что с этим можно и перестараться. Все параметры должны быть в каких-то разумных пределах.

  • Id say possibly the magnet helps with energy like the sun so i feel that since both contain energy that could be why, what anout a magnet crumbled up into soil? Can that work and maybe something the absorbs light and heat so your plants dry quicker, have extra energy in the soil and more light from energy that sounds like the faster youll have soul dry once its a seedling and the more energy it has and the more light should mean more growth and maybe a frequency that reacts to photosynthesis to speed the growth up? I was thinking if gases can be liquides and vice versa isnt their a way to make the sun into a liquid if u subtract the heat? Then u have pure light without heat, but if that happens wouldnt someone have to test that to see if its to much energy? Yeah of course what about metal?   • magnets are electron flows from lining up the atoms it follows the line gets thrown off the end and sucked back up at the start so any atoms in this field should have some effect such as better nutrient release from pos/neg charges in the soil your plant could be more conductive making water easier to move up the plant due to fast growth cells will take more calcium as cell size increases there is an electrical potential in the air on earth trying to ground its self that also flows trough plants sucking water to the top (capacitor stuff). it helps produce more atmospheric energy by giving of humidity, on a further note for a fancy experiment would be to replicate a stronger Schumann resonance the heart beat of earth from the electricity potential of the ionosphere it typically pulses at 7.83 hertz due to all cell tower saturating wave bands the Schumann resonance is hard to pick up now i would expect a VERY beneficial growth to happen from the resonance.

  • I knew plants reacted to the earth magnetic field since you can see them react interesting in earth magnetic odities and lines(landscape and tree care in combination with some info I got from a druid long ago which turned out very easy to find back in nature). also some more static like effects which are naturally enhanced on such places, as can also be seen in certain types of trees growing either much better in such places with a certain polarity or not growing well at all in such places with the opposite polarity. but since now I need to grow small plants at home I decided that I should look into how to actually use normal magnets to do it instead of a specially modified garden, to act like a antenna to interact with it.

  • Check out Theoria Apophasis YouTube website – he has several articles relating to exposing seeds/plants to magnetic fields. He shows you how to set the plants/magnets up to get the best exposure. For example, exposing plants to one “pole” (e.g. South) will increase rate of growth, but the opposite pole will actually DECREASE rate of growth. (I’ve forgotten which pole increases growth and which one decreases it, sorry)

  • Thats the old forgotten way to grow anything… Static electric fields and antennas as fertilizer… Antenna systems are used to amplifier up the natural environment background vibrations. It brings virtually the sun much close to the plants. Do not forget that magnetic field is only an effect of electric field.
