  • The oil slick can block light, this reduces the rate of photosynthesis for the underwater plants and seaweed. As photosynthesis won’t take place, the plants won’t survive, ruining the ecosystem and food chain (which is detrimental to the other species the fish of course). Photosynthesis also allows the plants to give away oxygen, which is something that humans desperately need to survive. About 50% of oxygen that we breathe, comes from the ocean, so reducing this number is going to be life threatening
