Carnations, a popular flower known for their beautiful and fragrant blooms, can be grown from seeds. To start carnations from seeds, they need cold stratification, well-draining soil, and careful temperature control. Dianthus seeds are about 1mm or 1/16″ in diameter and have a rounded end and a pointed end. They are brown or black in color and are easy to handle.
Carnation seeds can be started indoors or directly sown in the ground after the last frost. Germination will occur within 2 weeks if temperatures are between 65 and 75 degrees Fahrenheit. To grow carnations from seeds, cover them thinly with soil and keep them moist.
Carnations produce small, dark seeds, which are called “flower of the gods”. Start carnations seeds indoors 6-8 weeks before the last frost date and press them into seed starting mix. Seeds should only be ⅛” deep. Heirloom, open pollinated, non-GMO seeds with no chemical treatments are suitable for growing carnations.
Carnations grow big, full blooms on strong, straight stems with blue-gray foliage that stays attractive even when the blooms are finished. This variety is a vibrant pink color and also features equally attractive blue-gray foliage. Carnations are commonly used as cut flowers and can be purchased from Kings, a leading supplier of vegetable and flower seeds.
📹 Collecting Carnation Seeds
Today I though to bring you along while i collected my carnation seeds. I explain this in a very unique way, if you saw the video …
📹 Starting Carnations From Seed For Mother’s Day, How To Sow Carnation Seeds
This video follows a gardener as they plant carnation seeds in a greenhouse, hoping to have blooming flowers for Mother’s Day. The gardener explains the process of planting the seeds, including the type of soil and the importance of keeping the soil moist. They also discuss the expected germination time and the care needed for the seedlings.
I work at a hotel, and for Valentine’s Day some guests left behind some Burgundy Minerva carnations. (btw, in my free time I’m The Plant Guy so everyone turns to me for plants 😂) Anyhoo, the farm that cultivates those Minervas do NOT sell to the public. You can ONLY get them from a couple select flortists and bridal shops, cut. 😡 So, I have six that I cut in half for twelve rooting attempts – which I have NEVER successfully done with cut flowers. This morning I found the six bottom halfs have new growth! The six top flower halfs I’m just hoping may still go to seed. Myself and some of the ladies at work are REALLY hoping for success. But I didn’t know anything about how to collect the seeds. I needed this! 😁 Also… you’re fun to listen to. 😉😘 THANK YOU! 😻😽
I think calling them pregnant makes sense. I’m glad you checked the ones that did not feel pregnant and showed that to us because mine don’t feel pregnant and I really want them to be! LoL What is ot called when the carnation dies, dries out and a few more fresh petals appear? This happens to my cut carnations.

Thank you for the great articles! I watched this one and the stock one for harvesting seeds and I wanted to ask… does a purple flower seed pod produce only purple flower producing seeds? Just wondering if it’s worth separating the colors before I store the seeds. Original seed packet were mixed colors but it might be fun to plan the garden according to where I like certain colors
Every single one of mine that I have open have either been green or whi don’t understand if I’m not leaving them on the on the steam long. Enough or what but I always keep the dried carnation? Of it all of carnations and you can do a lot of arts and crafts with dry carnations. But I have yet to find a seed that makes me so sad😢😢😢
About a week ago, I planted seven seeds from a flower pod that came from my own carnation plant. I have one more pod for the spring, but I wanted to see if the other pod’s seeds would germinate, and they have! Six out of seven and I’ve reduced them to four. So, success, and I’m a proud parent. Let’s see if I can coax them to maturity and flowering in the next month or so. 😉
I’m trying to grow carnations from seed in a zone 3 garden for May wedding this year. I just started them yesterday. I hope they bloom in time, but I may have waited too long! In your experience with these, how many days to germinate did they take; and how long to get true leaves? Thank you so much for this article. I feel very encouraged
