Lotus plants, also known as lotus plants, are aquatic perennials that produce prized flowers that rise above the waterline. To grow a lotus from seeds, follow these steps:
- Add enough water to raise the water level to 2-3″ above the soil.
- Place the tuber into the mud with the growing tips pointed up. Chinese growers leave the ‘tail’, the cut end, above water for a few days.
- Avoid covering the growing tips completely with soil.
- Place the pot in a warm, sunny area.
- Choose and prepare lotus seeds.
- Plant and germinate them.
- Keep the water warm and clean to ensure a quick sprout. Change the water if cloudy to prevent bacteria growth.
- Seedlings should sprout in a week or more.
- Use a black plastic bucket to retain heat.
- Research the best soil for your lotus plant.
If a lotus is to be grown in a pond or pool, it should be planted in shallow water (15 to 50 cm below the surface), directly in the bottom, or in a container 30 cm deep.
To propagate Lotus plants, carefully remove the lotus from the container and gently separate the roots into sections each containing at least one. This process will help you create a beautiful, majestic aquatic oasis in your backyard.

Can lotus grow without sunlight?
Lotus plants thrive in full sunlight, with the exception of hot desert climates where shade cloth is desirable. They require temperatures of at least 75 degrees F. for at least three months in summer. Lotus can grow 5 feet or taller, and to maximize size and frequency of bloom, they should be potted into a container a minimum of 2 feet across. Some people use plastic or ceramic pots on their decks or patios, bathtubs, small pre-formed ponds in the landscape, or create a header pond above the main pond.
If using lotus in the main pond, a container without holes and wider than it is high is best. Use a good garden soil with low organic content, either sandy or clay, and avoid commercial house plant or garden mix. Aquatic containers for lotus are available, and most dwarf lotus cultivars can grow 3 feet to 4 feet tall.
Does lotus grow in pots?
To grow Lotus in pots or containers, carefully select a dwarf or smaller variety, such as ‘Wing Lotus’ or ‘Clear Moon Lotus’. Choose a pot size that is wide enough to support the spread out leaves, at least 18 inches wide and 8 inches deep. Fill the pot with heavy clay or loamy garden soil, as Lotus is primarily a water plant. This will allow the roots to spread out and ensure the plant’s growth.
How long do lotus flowers take to grow?
To grow a lotus, plant the tuber in a sunny area in April or May. The lotus takes three to four weeks to bloom in warm weather, so start indoors on a heating mat and move the pot outside when warmer. Sacred Lotus can be found in Lake Syndor from May to August. For continuous blooming, add fertilizer tablets every two weeks after the tuber has started to sprout. Keep the water level about two to three inches above the soil, as it will evaporate during summer heat. For a more decorative presentation, place the watertight container into a larger pot and fill it with water until it meets the top.

One such location is situated in close proximity to the frozen lake, situated to the southwest of Everlook City. The other is located directly to the left of the cave entrance in the Ice Thistle Hills.

What is the lifespan of a lotus plant?
The lotus, a perennial plant, blooms for up to three days and is a significant symbol in ancient Egyptian culture. With over 150 species, including dwarf, wild, hybrid, and Chinese lotus, it can grow for years in a pond. Lotus leaves are waterproof and can be observed as if they have been waxed after rain. To set up lotus root tubers, use a container at least 36″ in diameter, 4-5″ of aquatic soil, and no more than 3 tubers with the tips up.
Carefully place an inch of soil over the tubers, taking care with new growth, and slowly pour water into the container. Avoid touching any new growth and wait for the lotus to grow faster before introducing it to the pond. Over 2000 years of viable lotus seeds have been found.
How to grow black lotus?
After sprouting a few leaves and establishing a healthy tuber, transfer your lotus to its final home. Layer 3-5″ of soil mixture to the bottom of the vessel and plant the lotus tubers. Fill with warm water to barely top the leaves. As the lotus leaves grow, gradually add more water until they reach the top of the pot. Check the water level regularly to prevent evaporation. Once the lotus has aerial leaves, it has begun to mature, expecting blooms in the second year. Enjoy your small oasis in your backyard or porch.
What herbs drop black lotus?
Black Lotus can be obtained through looting when harvesting high-level herbs across the world map. These include Plaguebloom in WPL, Mountain Silversage/Dreamfoil in Un’Goro Crater, and Azshara and Icecap in Winterspring.
Are lotus flowers hard to grow?
Lotus, a sacred plant native to Asia and Australia, is a popular choice for water gardeners due to its beauty and ease of growth. Lotus stalks start in muddy soil and water, producing fragrant white-to-pink flowers that can grow up to 12 inches across. Some lotus varieties require a large amount of water surface for maturity, while others can thrive in small water gardens. Lotus can become an invasive bully when planted in pond bottoms or open waters.
It grows best in full sun, with 6-8 hours of daily light and warm water temperatures between 75 and 90 degrees Fahrenheit. Without warm water and a constant sunny temperature during summer, it may disrupt growth and flower formation. Lotus flowers are short-lived and follow large ornamental seed pods.
Can I grow lotus in sand?
To plant a lotus tuber in small ponds or water gardens, fill a large round container with heavy garden soil and spread coarse sand over it. Place the lotus tuber crosswise on the sand, ensuring it sticks straight up. Water the container until it reaches just above the growing tips and wait. Once the lotus breaks dormancy and shoots out leaves, lower the pot into the pond and raise it to the right level. Place bricks underneath if needed to raise it to the right level.
The tuber will eventually send roots into the soil and stems will emerge. Lotus care tips include plenty of full sun, clean, warm water, and seasonal upkeep. Lotus flowers are one of the most awaited gifts from the plant, lasting from 3 to 5 days from midsummer to early fall.
Can lotus grow in just water?
To grow lotuses in a pond, position the container two to four inches under water, with taller varieties growing up to 18 inches deep and dwarf varieties two to 12 inches deep. In winter, leave the lotuses in the pond as long as the tubers are protected from ice. In cold climates, move the container to a deeper part of the pond and return to a shallower area in spring. White lotuses, also known as the Sacred Lotus or white Egyptian lotus, have a fascinating history, with ancient Egyptians worshipping and extracting perfume from their blossoms.

Great article! Do the plants need a vegetation break or can you grow them the whole year indoors at ~ 22 °C at a bright window? In the winter it gets a bit darker(Germany). Thinking about a small indoor Pond with a Lotus. And i had some struggels with transplanting 1 year old Plants, most of them died, do you have some advices? Thanks and have a nice day 🙂
I did about 9 seeds exactly the way you showed but so far only one germinated. But still no roots. Do I wait until some roots show to place in Dirt?? The one that germated exactly after 8 days . The others are still not doing much. I change water everyday. Waiting to hear from you !!! Thank you for the wonderful article. Your music is soft enough to hear your instructions very well. thank you 🙏🙏
Thank you so much! I just ordered some “bonsai lotus” seeds online. I am not sure if there is a difference between these and the ones you planted, but is it possible to grow them only in water? Some sellers online have been advertising that no soil is needed, only water, while others do say to plant in soil like you did. Thank you again!
Your article is very informative, I followed all the steps which you mentioned and shifted to the bigger pot after small leaf petals came, after 2 days my larger container got filled with green algae and it became so thick the small leaves turned completely brown. Algae killed my lotus plants.. Could you please suggest any tips as to how prevent algae growth. I am restarting once more from coming Monday. Thanks -R
Thanks for this wonderful article. I have access to white lotus growing wild. I would like to gather the seeds and follow your instructions, but I do not know how to get to the seed pod. What I see in the water is exactly what you show……..the flower is rooted in the soild and the tendrils come out with flowers and leaves…….but i do not see the seed pod. Thank you!
That is a great article. I am just wondering so how often that water has to be changed? And one more thing I am very worried about is I live in a quite cold climate (no chance to leave it outside of course) but is lotus need very warm and sunny place as we don’t get much sun, or not always you can move it around to get sun? Thank you lot!
Great article. I’m in California, USA so it takes longer to get them to go but they are getting taller and are almost out of the water at the moment (after 10 days) no roots yet but working on 2nd leaf. I got 2 out of 5 seeds to sprout. I’m going to put them in a pond with fish. Do you use fertilizer to help them grow? If so what kind and how often?
I have germinated plants from seeds after rooting I potted them by pot in tub method. I kept my tub in gallery where I can get fresh air but no direct sunlight. It’s been 15days I guess. Now 2 leaves which bloomed very initial stage got dry I cut it down. I want to know if I can now put my tub in direct sunlight

I’m trying to grow my blue lotus, and the stems grow nice and long and then they wither; but they are starting to grow a second or third stem.. Are they getting too much sunlight? I’m putting them in clean water everyday, and it’s been longer than 8 days and their leaves are not opening yet. (They seem to whither too quickly for them to open)
