Growing Epidendrum Orchids: A Guide?

Epidendrum orchids are hardy plants that can bloom multiple times in a season and can handle low nutrient locations without intensive maintenance. They are known for producing vibrant colored flowers that brighten homes and improve moods. They can be grown indoors or outdoors, and can be successfully grown by following specific guidelines and adapting to specific conditions.

For outdoor cultivation, the main requirement is good drainage, with loamy, sandy soil being ideal. To grow epidendrums, mix fine and medium-grade fir bark in equal volumes and add 15 to 20 percent coarse prelite. Fertilize with orchid food every two weeks and water about once per week. Replant epidendrums once every three to four years in orchid potting mix.

In warmer climates, plant them in the ground in sandy soil, but any well-drained soil will work. Provide an hour of off-peak sunlight in the spring. Epidendrums prefer good drainage and thrive in a mix of cactus soil and medium-grade bark. Fertilize with orchid food every two weeks and water about once per week. Ideally, grow epidendrums under nets allowing 50-60 sunlight to pass through, as plants receiving lesser amounts of light have leaves that are less vibrant.
