How to anchor down a greenhouse?

To ensure the longevity of your greenhouse, secure it into hard ground using anchor bolts or plugs with a diameter of at least 8 mm. If your greenhouse lacks anchor points for hard ground, use galvanised bolt-down post supports with a fixing plate. Spread these along the greenhouse’s length and width, inserting the frame, and secure it with a threaded rod and bolt. Surround the perimeter with buried blocks and fix the structure over several points. This method ensures the greenhouse remains sturdy over time.

To ensure optimal greenhouse ventilation, use a maximum-minimum thermometer to monitor the temperature and be alert for signs of plant damage. Open doors and vents on sunny days, and temporarily remove panes to help during heat waves. Fit automatic vent openers to ensure roof vents open even when you’re not around, but remember that it takes time for the wax to expand. Provide alternative ventilation such as doors and side vents to prevent damaging temperatures. In changeable weather, vents and doors may need to be partially open to limit sudden temperature increases. Larger greenhouses may require automated ventilation and shading.

Shading is usually required from mid-spring until early autumn to release some heat but limits the light plants receive. Use only the minimum amount of shading to keep temperatures below 25-27ºC (77-81ºF), allowing as much light in as possible, especially for edible plants like tomatoes. Sun-loving plants like succulents may not need shading, but providing shade can make the greenhouse more pleasant.

Which way should a door swing into a room?

Door designs in interior rooms like bedrooms, bathrooms, and offices typically swing to enter and pull to close. This design reduces obstructions, makes entering less clunky, and reduces the risk of accidentally bumping into someone in the hallway. The hinges on the inside are less likely to be tampered with, and pushing the door forward makes it easier to break down if a child locks themselves inside. Inward swinging doors offer a unique view of the room and enhance the overall aesthetic appeal.

Should I open my greenhouse every day?

To properly ventilate your greenhouse, it is essential to monitor the temperature and adjust ventilation accordingly. For most common greenhouse plants, damage can occur when the temperature reaches 27°C (81°F). To ensure proper ventilation, purchase a minimum/maximum thermometer to monitor the temperature and adjust ventilation accordingly. During summer highs, keep roof vents and doors open, while during spring and autumn, more attention is needed.

To create a chimney effect, use side and roof vents on opposite sides of the greenhouse. Cold air enters through lower side vents, rises as heated, and is expelled through roof vents, creating a small vacuum. This vacuum pulls more cold air through lower side vents, lowering the temperature and circulating the air.

Alitex greenhouses come with automatic roof vents as standard to prevent overheating, using wax pistons that expand as temperatures rise, opening the vents.

Where not to put a greenhouse?

Place a greenhouse under tall trees to reduce sunlight and prevent glass damage. High walls, hedges, and trees can serve as windbreaks, providing shelter without blocking light. These barriers keep plants warm and prevent wind damage during storms. However, it’s important to ensure the trees are a suitable distance to provide shelter without blocking light. Providing ample room for cleaning and maintenance is crucial for maintaining a healthy greenhouse environment.

How to keep a greenhouse door closed?

To prepare your greenhouse for high wind, lock any lockable doors and storm locks on roof vents. Disengage automatic openers before applying storm locks. This will help protect your greenhouse from extreme weather conditions. There are various protective measures you can take, including wind-proofing, replacing or repairing damaged parts, and considering the type of greenhouse and its location. This article provides tips and suggestions on safeguarding your greenhouse and garden space, ensuring security and peace of mind in any weather conditions. By following these steps, you can ensure your greenhouse remains safe and secure for your garden.

Does a greenhouse need to be anchored?

To prevent your greenhouse from blowing away in the wind, ensure it is properly anchored to the ground using various fixing options such as concrete slabs, ground anchor plates, base plates, or screw anchors. The main danger to your greenhouse or polytunnel is wind, which can weaken the cover, enter the structure through air vents, and uproot it from the ground. Even light winds can undermine or cause damage to your structure.

What temperature should you open the greenhouse door at?

To effectively cool a greenhouse over 29 degrees Celsius, open the door and ensure vents or louvres are open. Automatic vents and louvres automatically maintain the greenhouse’s optimal temperature throughout the day, allowing you to adjust the temperature as needed. Investing in greenhouse blinds can protect your greenhouse from direct sunlight on warm days, and pairing them with adequate vents and louvres can help cool it down effectively. For a more cost-effective solution, attach shading material internally or use shading paint directly onto the greenhouse glass.

However, this can be difficult to install and remove daily, and some paints can be washed off or peeled off the glass. Overall, utilizing these methods can help maintain a comfortable and efficient greenhouse temperature.

How do you secure a greenhouse door?

To ensure the safety of your greenhouse, it is essential to position it in a location that is as sheltered from wind as possible. Consider planting hedges or positioning fences as protection from future winds. Choose the strongest greenhouse you can afford, as the more you spend on the basic frame, the stronger the frame will be. If your greenhouse has clips, use silicone sealant to secure them, or replace them with Bar capping, a full-length PVC capping system that secures the glass all the way up and holds it more firmly in windy conditions.

Ensure your greenhouse is securely anchored down to the floor using brown Rawl plugs and 2″ no 10 screws. If your greenhouse is on slabs or concrete, drill and screw it down with brown Rawl plugs and 2″ no 10 screws using a 7mm hammer drill bit. Attach your greenhouse properly to your metal base, drilling through the sill of the greenhouse, through the base, and bolting them together with a standard greenhouse bolt and nut.

Shadow your greenhouse by situating fences or hedging in the way of prevailing winds. Be aware that areas that look “sheltered” may actually be “wind tunnels”. Before heavy winds, ensure that doors and windows are closed and stay closed during the wind. If you have a sliding door with no catch, secure it by drilling a hole in the top door track and inserting a padlock.

After heavy winds, check your greenhouse for any loose clips or panes that may have blown out. Reposition the clips and use silicone sealant to keep them in place. Never attempt to repair your greenhouse while it is still windy. If you haven’t ordered your greenhouse yet, choose a Hercules or Robinsons greenhouse for the best wind resistance.

  • Great articles! Thanks! is there a difference between the method used to attain level ground? i have a 32 ft slightly sloped plot with maybe an inch grade (waiting for level to measure). My thought was to add 1 inch of height to the lower end of the foundation. But i am seeing your method of a dropped floor more often than how i thought to go at it (if ground is unleveled). Can you tell me which is preferred and why? My rational was water drainage. better above ground than below. Ty!
