Fish emulsion is an organic fertilizer that aids orchid growth in both leaves and flower spikes. It is high in nitrogen, making it ideal for building chlorophyll and creating strong plant cells. Fish emulsion is made from fish byproducts and offers a rich source of essential nutrients. However, it can be caustic to orchid roots, so it is important to check the roots for rot or burn.
Organic fertilizers have to break down through bacterial action in the media before becoming useful to plants, which prevents burning roots. To use fish emulsion, combine ½ ounce of fish emulsion with one gallon of water and water the plants with the mixture twice. This process promotes healthy growth by increasing nutrient uptake, improving soil structure, and stimulating microbial activity.
To prepare fish emulsion, dilute it before watering plants at the soil level or using it as a foliar spray. The label recommends 1 tbs/gal once a month for adult plants and twice a month for seedlings. A trace element fortified fish emulsion at 1/4 to 1/2 the recommended strength on the label is recommended for general garden plants.
To use fish emulsion, dilute about 5 ounces into 1 gallon of water. Fish primarily produce nitrogen, so it is not a complete fertilizer for orchids. If your water is untreated, it can be decent but still needs phosphorus. You can also try misting your orchid with fish emulsion or seaweed for added nutrients.
To feed and fertilize orchids, use a balanced orchid fertilizer diluted in water.
