Chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) are the primary cause of ozone layer depletion, which is caused by the release of chemical compounds containing gaseous chlorine or bromine from industry and human activities. These compounds are more potent greenhouse gases than carbon dioxide, the most abundant planet-warming gas. The thinning of Earth’s ozone layer is a result of the release of these compounds through solvents, spray aerosols, refrigerators, and air-conditioners.
The ozone layer plays a crucial role in keeping the planet habitable by absorbing potentially dangerous ultraviolet (UV-B) radiation from the stratosphere. However, a significant increase in upper-stratospheric ozone continues due to declines in ozone-depleting substances and increases in greenhouse gases (GHGs). Increases in tropospheric ozone lead to a warming of Earth’s surface because ozone is a greenhouse gas (GHG).
The depletion of the ozone layer is mainly caused by the increase in emissions of chlorine- and bromine-containing compounds like CFCs, halons, carbon tetrachloride, carbon tetrachloride, methyl chloroform, and methyl bromide. Emissions of greenhouse gases can affect the depletion of the ozone layer through atmospheric interaction. Although synthetic greenhouse gases do not damage the ozone layer, they have global warming potential, contributing to climate change.
Ozone depletion and climate change are linked in various ways, but ozone depletion is not a major cause of climate change. For ozone depletion, halons are the most effective gases, while HFCs cause no ozone depletion. For climate change, all gases contribute to global warming.
In conclusion, ozone depletion and climate change are linked in various ways, with the ozone hole itself having a minor cooling effect due to the presence of ozone in the stratosphere.

Does global warming cause ozone depletion?
The cooling effect of ozone depletion is comparatively minor in comparison to the warming impact of greenhouse gases, which represent the primary agents of global climate change. This is due to the fact that both ozone-depleting substances and their substitutes are classified as greenhouse gases.
What destroys the ozone layer?
The ozone layer, a protective gas in Earth’s atmosphere, absorbs UV rays and preserves life. However, it is being destroyed by ozone-depleting substances (ODSs), including chlorofluorocarbons found in everyday products like air conditioners and aerosol cans. These harmful ODSs can create holes in the ozone layer, allowing UV rays to directly hit Earth, causing long-term health risks such as skin cancer and eye diseases. Long-term exposure to UV radiation also harms animals, plants, and microbes.
Additionally, many ozone-depleting substances contribute to climate change when they accumulate in the atmosphere and warm the planet. Understanding the consequences of ozone layer depletion is crucial for addressing global health issues.
What depletes the ozone layer?
This page provides information on ozone-depleting substances (ODS), which contribute to stratospheric ozone depletion. ODS include chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs), hydrochlorofluorocarbons (HCFCs), halons, methyl bromide, carbon tetrachloride, hydrobromofluorocarbons, chlorobromomethane, and methyl chloroform. These substances are stable in the troposphere and only degrade under intense ultraviolet light in the stratosphere. When they break down, they release chlorine or bromine atoms, which deplete ozone.
ODS are split into two groups under the Clean Air Act: Class I ODS, such as chlorofluorocarbons, which are used for refrigeration, air conditioning, packaging, insulation, solvents, or aerosol propellants, and Class II ODS, such as hydrochlorofluorocarbons, which contain hydrogen, fluorine, chlorine, and carbon atoms. These substances are less potent at destroying stratospheric ozone than CFCs and have been introduced as temporary replacements for CFCs.
For each ODS, the page provides the compound’s atmospheric lifetime, Ozone Depletion Potential (ODP), Global Warming Potential (GWP), and Chemistry Abstract Service (CAS) numbers. The ODP is the ratio of the impact on ozone of a chemical compared to the impact of a similar mass of CFC-11. The GWP is the amount of global warming caused by a substance, and the GWP for CO2 is defined to be 1. 0.
A table of all ozone-depleting substances is available, along with a table of GWPs for many non-ozone-depleting substances.
Do carbon emissions harm the ozone layer?
The future of the ozone layer is significantly influenced by the rise in atmospheric levels of carbon dioxide and nitrous oxide. An increase in N2O levels results in a corresponding increase in NOx production, which contributes to ozone depletion and cooling of the stratosphere.
Does global warming cause the ozone hole?
The ozone hole, caused by human-produced chlorofluorocarbons and halons, is an area in the stratosphere above Antarctica where ozone molecules are destroyed. Global warming, primarily caused by greenhouse gases like carbon dioxide and methane, is the rise in average global surface temperature, trapping heat in lower levels of the atmosphere. While there are some connections between the two phenomena, they are not the same.
What gases deplete the ozone layer?
Ozone depleting substances, including chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs), hydrochlorofluorocarbons (HCFCs), hydrobromoflurocarbons (HBFCs), halons, methyl bromide, carbon tetrachloride, and methyl chloroform, are man-made gases that destroy ozone once they reach the ozone layer. These gases can cause skin cancer, cataracts, plant growth distortion, and damage to the marine environment. New Zealand regulates these substances and implements measures to reduce their impact.
Is ozone a greenhouse gas, yes or no?
Tropospheric ozone (O3) is the third most significant anthropogenic greenhouse gas, absorbing infrared radiation from Earth’s surface and thereby reducing the amount of radiation that escapes to space.
Can gas damage ozone layer?
Ozone depletion is primarily caused by chlorine-containing source gases, primarily CFCs and related halocarbons. When exposed to UV light, these gases dissociate, releasing chlorine atoms that catalyze ozone destruction. Polar stratospheric clouds (PSCs) form during winter, with temperatures around or below -80°C. These clouds provide surfaces for chemical reactions that lead to ozone destruction in the spring.
The photochemical processes involved are complex but well-understood. Most of the chlorine in the stratosphere resides in “reservoir” compounds, primarily chlorine nitrate (ClONO 2) and stable end products like HCl. These compounds sequester Cl, which can be made available via absorption of light at wavelengths shorter than 400 nm.
During Antarctic winter and spring, reactions on the surface of polar stratospheric cloud particles convert these “reservoir” compounds into reactive free radicals (Cl and ClO). Denitrification is the process by which clouds remove NO2 from the stratosphere by converting it to nitric acid in PSC particles, which is lost by sedimentation. This prevents newly formed ClO from being converted back into ClONO 2.
What caused the hole in the ozone layer?
The ozone hole is a human-caused hole in the ozone layer above the South Pole during the Southern Hemisphere’s spring. It is caused by the use of gases like chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) in spray cans and refrigerants, which break down ozone molecules in the upper atmosphere. Governments recognized the danger of CFCs and international agreements were made in the 1980s to reduce their production. Hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs) were replaced by CFCs.
Since the 1990s, surface UV levels have been relatively stable, and ozone hole recovery has contributed to less surface UV than expected. However, HFCs still cause some harm, resulting in slower reforming and ozone holes still forming regularly in Antarctica.
What are 5 things that cause the ozone layer to deplete?
The following substances are classified as ozone-depleting: chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs), halons, carbon tetrachloride (CCl4), methyl chloroform (CH3CCl3), hydrobromofluorocarbons (HBFCs), hydrochlorofluorocarbons (HCFCs), methyl bromide (CH3Br), and bromochloromethane (CH2BrCl).
What is the main cause of ozone layer depletion?
Ozone depletion is a global issue caused by the destruction of ozone molecules by chlorine and bromine atoms in the stratosphere. The Earth’s ozone layer, located 15-40 kilometers above the Earth’s surface, contains the bulk of atmospheric ozone. Depletion of this layer by ozone depleting substances (ODS) leads to higher UVB levels, which can cause increased skin cancers and cataracts, as well as potential damage to marine organisms, plants, and plastics.
The Earth’s atmosphere is composed of several layers, including the troposphere, which extends from the Earth’s surface up to about 10 km in altitude and is responsible for most weather. The stratosphere, the region above the troposphere, extends from about 10km to 50km in altitude and is primarily used by commercial airlines. The stratosphere gets warmer at higher altitudes due to ozone absorbing ultraviolet radiation. Warm air remains in the upper stratosphere, while cool air remains lower, resulting in less vertical mixing in this region.
Most atmospheric ozone is concentrated in the stratosphere, about 9 to 18 miles (15 to 30 km) above the Earth’s surface. Ozone molecules are constantly formed and destroyed in the stratosphere, with the total amount remaining relatively stable over the decades measured. Human activities have damaged the ozone-layer protection from ultraviolet (UV) light, leading to increased skin cancer and cataract rates.

It is very interesting to watch. Expand and open insight into the impact of air pollution caused by nature, namely the combustion system, volcanoes, while there are also human activities in everyday life, fossil combustion systems, gas factories, or vehicles that cause the depletion of the ozone layer. from air pollution, especially CFCs. This is important for the public to know so much that the air pollution produced can reduce the activity of human activity itself and prevent global warming and an increase in the earth’s temperature which has an impact on life.
So that being said will our temperatures rise and or keeping rising? Will we lose winters in some regions? Can we reverse any of the effect in any way? Also if Antarctica will shrink even after we correct what we’re doing and it won’t essentially re-freeze and gain its size back how is it that way in the first place?
If CFC causes holes in ozone layer or makes it thin, why on the poles? Who uses AC, Refrigerator, Sprays in the artic circle? So CFC emission from NY, Tokyo, HK etc all traveled across the globe to the artic circle where it breaks the ozone molecule.. someone explain this. By this logic ozone holes should have been created on top of temperate zones where CFC should be high. Ozone (o3 molecule)’s lifespan is very short, 30 mins. So does it matter? ‘Most ozone (about 90%) resides in a layer that begins between 6 and 10 miles (10 and 17 kilometers) above the Earth’s surface.’ Why flights which fly in the same area not affecting it?
sangat bermanfaat dan menarik untuk dipelajari, memang benar bahwasanya di planet bumi dikelilingi oleh lapisan ozon yang berfungsi sebagai pembatas antara radiasi ultraviolet bumi dari matahari. lapisan ozon ini tersusun dari lapisan molekul yang reaktif, megandung 3 atom oksigen, dan terdiri dari 6 lapisn. akan tetapi lapisan ozon ini akan rusak dan menipis, adapun apisan ozon menipis disebabkan oleh bahan kimia CFC yang ditemukan pada refrigeran, aerosol, produk plastik, dan bisa juga ditemukan pada polusi kendaraan, pabrik, dll. very useful and interesting to study, it is true that the planet earth is surrounded by an ozone layer which serves as a barrier between the earth’s ultraviolet radiation from the sun. This ozone layer is composed of a reactive molecular layer, contains 3 oxygen atoms, and consists of 6 layers. however, this ozone layer will be damaged and thinned out, while the ozone layer thinner is caused by CFC chemicals found in refrigerants, aerosols, plastic products, and can also be found in pollution from vehicles, factories, etc.
No such thing as ozone hole at geographic poles. What we actually have is atmosphere going in and out of polar openings in vortex style just like all other planets with atmosphere. Polar openings are located at 90 latitude, at geographic poles, rotation axis of earth. Read Marshall B. Gardner’s book pdf for compelling evidence of polar openings. Ozone = O + Zone. O is a symbol for polar opening. Zone means area. Read between the lines.
I’m an AC technician for at least 20 to 30 years they told us it was safe for the ozone. Technicians thinking they were “safe” vented these HFC’s during certain repairs because the Government told us they weren’t ozone depleting chemical compounds. We even had to get certified from the EPA to handle the old CFC’s. Now 30 years later they say this damages ozone too! OMG. I can’t even phathom even how much the AC industry has contributed to this problem from bad info from the government. SMH.
Information is one way to gain knowledge, based on YouTube, a new knowledge can be obtained about the depletion of the ozone layer. The ozone layer is one of the layers that protects the earth from ultraviolet radiation, many factors can cause the depletion of this ozone layer. ozone, it is necessary for us to digest the information contained in this YouTube.
Sorry this is just my opinion. I don’t think CFCs are the gases that makes the ozone layer depleted. Yes CFCs may have Chlorine. Chlorine breaks down the O3. But as I knew the Chlorine is very reactive. It will react with other things. And furthermore the CFCs is heavier than other gases right ? So it will always go down.
The thing I don’t understand is how CFC’s that are heavier than air can get above our air into the ozone layer to react with it? I know it works in a lab but it doesn’t on earth. Also it is curious that this information was discovered the year before DuPont’s patent ran out. Any company could have made CFC’s much more cheaply than DuPont had after their patent ran out.

chlorine react with ozone but not directly-as the article is said misleading information-but indirectly through a series of chemical and physical reactions: first the oxygene hydrolisis because of the presence of UV, then the radical oxygene react with Chlorine oxides to give rise to mono chlorine oxides which react with ozone…
Ozone is made by UV light striking oxygen in the atmosphere. Ozone is unstable and returns back to oxygen as UV light breaks it apart again. This oxygen to ozone back to oxygen will continue so long as there is UV light striking oxygen in the upper atmosphere. The atmosphere is constantly moving, lowest areas of Ozone creation would be around the north and south poles. Pending time of year.
Don’t you find it so odd how nasa shows us a small marble from the moon ( a false picture of course) ( because we don’t see the moon millions of light years from where we stand) yet have never, ever ever ever, shown us the sun, hm! What’s wrong with this picture!!! We can clearly see the Sun and the moon on a clear day together just looking as beautiful as ever. Wake up!!!

Strange, at first glance, I read deception, and every time passing this article.. Now I’m perusal it.. What if, for those theorists out there, there is a deception within the cosmos? And this world? Computer animations can provide a very convincing picture and article, even live article feed of a world we supposedly live in. What if? What if all this was just to express a fictional world? You never know until you’re personally up in space yourself. It’s easy to lie, and even easier to believe.
Are fossil fuels one of the Great Walls described in the Fermi Paradox? On a planet that has gone through enough evolution to give rise to intelligent life, maybe in most cases there is a carbon build up in the ground. Like here on Earth we have oil. Intelligent life, if not always, finds a way to use that energy on a massive scale as population increases. Is this why we have not found any planets with thriving intelligent civilizations? Carbon emissions?
It’s pretty sad that people in several countries are thinking of moving on to other planets to gather resources for more money and not even thinking about reusing the ones that are already on earth. That’s literally the reason why this pollution stuff is happening is because people are being so greedy.
On this planet of Earth there is no such thing as pollution because something is what it was before so everything is something now was something else what it was everything now is sonic that it was before so it was always here so it is not a absolution so there is no pollution affecting this planet it’s all going to be fine it all works out in the and trust me I no been there done that doing again tomorrow music is my church silence is my enemy
