Do Tulips Grow Well In Florida’S South?

Florida’s climate is ideal for growing tropical and subtropical bulbous plants, including tulips, hyacinths, and some irises. These perennial plants grow from creeping rhizomes or bulbs in drier climates. Tulips, daffodils, hyacinths, crocus, and muscari thrive in colder climates, but Central Florida is too far south for them to perennialize. Tulips can be grown in pots and planted in cool or moderate high elevation tropical climates. However, they require at least 12-14 weeks of “cold period” to develop a beautiful flower, making it difficult to grow them in warm/tropical climates. Tulips can grow beautifully with some pre-cooling in a cool or moderate high elevation tropical climate.

Some northern bulbs, such as tulips, are poor performers in North Florida, as they live at the southern edge of the tulip’s growing range, making it difficult for them to repeat bloom reliably. Even under ideal conditions, tulips can still grow and bloom in Florida, providing a beautiful display for outdoor spaces.
