When selecting an orchid pot, consider the size of the plant and its native jungle-like environment. Most orchids are epiphytes and cling to their pots, so it’s important to choose the right size pot. If you’re repotting, the new pot should be slightly larger than the previous grow pot, otherwise, there will be root or root rot issues.
Orchids need special pots, which can be found in greenhouses or garden centers. It’s best to take quick measurements of your orchid’s pot before shopping around. For a full, large plant, give it a wide but shallow pot. Avoid poting up your orchid in a container that is too large, as this can quickly lead to root or root rot issues.
Size matters: smaller orchids need smaller pots, while larger species require bigger containers. Clear plastic pots are ideal for beginners as they allow monitoring of root health and moisture levels. The optimal size for an orchid pot is around 6 inches in width with the same proportionate depth. A 6-inch pot holds less moisture to reduce the risk of root rot and keeps the roots slightly confined.
When growing orchids, most types will require a pot between four to six inches. Start with a much smaller one if you have seedlings before moving into. The size of the pot chosen depends on the growth rate of the orchid and the size of the clump and root mass. For many orchids, choose a pot whose top diameter is about a third to a half of the height of the orchid plant.
If your orchid is too big for its pot, transplant it to a larger pot. Orchids usually like being a little tight in their pots, so you could transplant it to a larger pot.
Phals are usually grown in pots that measure 4 to 6 inches in diameter. Larger pots are required for growing larger plants with more leaves and roots. When repotting, place your orchid in a pot 1-2″ larger in diameter than its original pot, and add in new orchid potting mix. Remember to ensure the new pot has drainage holes and is around an inch or two larger than the pot your orchid has just outgrown.
