Cymbidium Orchid Pruning?

To properly prune your cymbidium orchid, sterilize your tools and follow these best practices: choose the right time after flowering or during its dormant period. Identify dead or damaged parts before pruning and cut at a 45-degree angle when cutting stems or branches. Cymbidiums need very little pruning, so cut back the flower stems to the base once all blooms have faded. The best season for pruning is after the final flower fades, allowing the orchid to channel energy into new growth and future blooms.

The optimal time to cut cymbidium flower stems is when the last bud is nearly fully open. Carefully cut any diseased leaves at the base where the leaf joins the pseudobulb, avoiding damage to healthy tissue. Trim withered leaves and inspect your roots carefully. Trim off excess roots and inspect them to ensure they are healthy, which should be a white/cream color and nice and thick.

In summary, it is essential to sterilize your tools, choose the right time for pruning, identify dead or damaged parts, and cut at a 45-degree angle when cutting stems or branches. This will help you maintain and grow your cymbidium orchid effectively.

  • I just watched your article on Cymbidium Orchid Care 5/2013! I have a huge cymbidium that needs repot I saw your article on repotting a smaller orchid could you have one on repotting a large root bound cymbididium its fall here in California but not a typical one hot! should I wait for spring ?, Thank you enjoy your articles!

  • Do all cymbidiums regrow? I thought I read somewhere that you should not expect regrowth from cymbidiums. I was concerned because I bought my mother a “Royal Flame” (Cym. Enzan Shining) for mothers day and a week or two later, all the flowers fell off, and the stem with the spikes turned black. Do they regrow?

  • I have new spikes coming from the plant and also new leaves. there are many new spikes I think I counted 7 or so. my question do I keep them all or trim some away? Plant bloomed in aug. 2013 lasted 2 months. it is now March, can you email me with your reply back at [email protected] also I have one stem that is getting a new stem too?
