Corallorhiza, a genus of flowering plants in the orchid family, are native to tropical and subtropical regions in Asia, Australia, and the Americas. They produce up to 40 small flowers, which can be inconspicuous but can be showy, and vary in color from white to yellow to reddish brown. Corallorhiza are found in forests, with some species preferring drier forests and others growing in moister forests and bogs.
The genus is restricted to North America, including Mexico, Central America, and the West Indies. The stems bear dark red scales and intricate orchid flowers, while the sepals are dark red or brown tinged with purple, long and pointed. Spotted coral-root is a saprophytic orchid that obtains its nutrients from decaying organic matter through a parasitic relationship with a fungal mycelium, rather than from photosynthesis. There are 12 species of Corallorhiza known to occur throughout temperate forests in North and Central America, with the center of diversity and distribution located in Mexico.
Corallorhiza is a representative of the orchid family, one of the largest families of flowering plants, with over 25,000 species. Corallorhiza mertensiana, the Western Coral Root, ranges from southeast Alaska through British Columbia to northern California, and east to Montana and Wyoming. Corallorhiza maculata prefers shady Aspen and Conifer forests where its coral-resembling roots feed off the forest floor fungi and roots of other plants.
C. trifida is primarily a woodland plant but may also be found in more open environments such as wet coastal dune slacks and alpine marshes. Corallorhiza maculata is considered globally diverse, occurring in a wide variety of habitats from dark forests and tree-lined roadside verges to dune slacks and open tundra.

Where is begonia maculata natural habitat?
Begonia maculata, also known as the polka dot begonia, is a species of begonia native to southeast Brazil. It grows naturally in the Atlantic rainforest, with occurrences confirmed in Espírito Santo and Rio de Janeiro. The plant has been introduced into Mexico, Cuba, the Dominican Republic, and Argentina. It has green oblong leaves with silver dots and red-purple undersides. The plant grows white or pink flowers in clusters with yellow centers on a single stem.
The best conditions for propagation include bright, indirect light, water poured just below the soil surface, filtered water, or rainfall. The climbing pink cultivar has male flowers on top and bottom and female flowers in between.
Why is the ghost orchid so rare?
Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary is home to a rare ghost orchid, which thrives in sub-tropical wetlands. These orchids are primarily found in remote swamps, where they are only visible during bloom. Threats to ghost orchids include poaching, habitat degradation, and climate change. Human activities have significantly reduced wetland habitats in Florida, making their future dependent on vigilant habitat protection and respecting this species from a distance.
Are spotted orchids rare?
Common spotted orchids are a popular species in the UK, tolerant of various soil types and not overly concerned with competition or grass cutting. They thrive on roadside verges, woodland rides, footpaths, and wild flower meadows. These perennial plants are fully hardy in the UK, suitable for alkaline or neutral soil and well-drained or damp conditions.
Plants sent from late May onwards will not flower this year due to broken flower stalks. The rosette of leaves appears in spring, followed by flowering and seed setting. The plant dies back in early autumn and remains dormant through winter. Plant out at the beginning or end of the dormancy period, keeping the soil level the same as the compost in the pot.
Plants in lawns or grassland should be managed under a wildflower meadow management regime. For grassland or garden beds, make a slit with a spade and slide the plant in keeping the main root vertical. Pour in a well-drained growing mix and close up the slit.
For pots, use a well-drained growing mix of peat-free potting compost, perlite, grit, sieved garden soil, and dolomite. Plants in the ground should survive winter in situ.
Where do orchids grow the most?
Orchids are highly adaptable and can grow in almost all climates except for extremes. They are found in both pantropical and endemic habitats, with most species growing in tropical forests. Neotropical orchids are found in southern Central America, northwest South America, and countries along the Andes Mountains. However, most orchids depend on a single pollinating species, and if that species is eliminated, the orchid that depends on that species becomes threatened by extinction. This could lead to habitat fragmentation and rainforest destruction, potentially causing the extinction of many orchid species.
Where is H maculata found?
Heteroscodra maculata is an Old World species of tarantula, native to West Africa, primarily found in Togo and Ghana. Known by various names, including Togo starburst and ornamental baboon, these spiders can reach full size after three years and can reach leg-spans of up to 13 centimetres. They are characterized by their chalky white coloration with mottled black and brown markings, and their thick rear legs, which may lead some to mistake them for baboon spiders.
These tarantulas are not part of the baboon spider subfamily of Harpactirinae and have highly potent venom, making them not suitable for handling. They are fast, defensive, and possess medically significant venom, but do not have urticating hairs, allowing them to bite as a primary defense. They are arboreal, and females reproduce readily, though sexual cannibalism may occur.

Where is the rarest orchid in the world?
The Western Underground Orchid is a rare plant found in Western Australia’s broom bush scrubland, with fewer than 50 known species. It lives underground and flowers from late May to early June, with over a hundred reddish and cream-colored flowers. The orchid, which lacks chlorophyll, parasitizes the broom honey myrtle bush’s roots, drawing nutrients through a symbiotic relationship with mycorrhizal fungus. Its strong fragrance is attributed to its unique habitat.
