Sweet potato plants can be a great companion for their growth, offering numerous botanical health benefits. Some good companion plants include Baker, Orapeake White, Hayman Branching Sunflowers, Soraya, Florenza, and Single Stem Sunflowers like Sunrich Orange. Parsnips repel pests and can be planted 6 inches apart.
Sunflowers are not the best companion plants for sweet potatoes as they can share diseases like potato blight and compete for sunlight and space. Instead of planting sunflowers, try other flowers that promote the growth of sweet potatoes. Squashes, like pumpkins, compete with sweet potatoes for space and nutrients. Sunflowers may increase the risk of disease.
Sweet potatoes can be planted alongside beans, corn, or peas, but they should be planted at the right distance and staked to allow them to grow upwards. Sunflowers can contribute to potato wilt and take up a lot of root space, which can stunt a potato’s growth.
Potted alongside sweet potatoes, you can also plant beans, corn, or peas, and turnips grow well with plants like broccoli and peas. By choosing the right plants and spacing them appropriately, you can ensure the success of your sweet potato garden.
In summary, sweet potatoes and other plants can be a great companion for their growth, but it is important to choose the right plants and avoid certain plants that may not be suitable for your garden.

Hi Steve. Thanks for the info. No wonder sweet potatoes grow so well in the Philippines being part of the morning glory family. Filipinos are very fond of Kangkong which is Ipomoea Aquatica (Morning Glory) as well as sweet potatoes. I’ve been trying to learn some of the flora of the Philippines. Especially medicinal plants. My father in law can cure a fever or belly ache with various teas and leaves that are growing outside near his home. He is wise to the ways of the mountain. Cheer and God Bless. ~Mike and Ester~
I will be planting some dill and oregano in my sweet potato bed. We’ve had such a strange April all my plants are confused. For several days it will get close to 90 % F and drop into the 40’s at night. Like yesterday and today, it’s right at 80, but was 48 this morning with a wind chill of upper 30’s. I like the cool weather but my plants don’t like the sudden temperature changes. Thanks Steve for another informative article. How’s your garden doing?
This was really interesting Steve, I’m growing morning glory at the moment and had no idea sweet potatoes were in that family. There seems a lot of plants that it could grow well with, I will consider this for next year as I’m not sure how much growing space I will have this year. Thanks for the info. Take care 😊
