Everybody around you can’t cheer you up all the time. If there’s no one to do that, you gotta give yourself positive reinforcement. Anyway, no doubt that positive reinforcement will help you do better as shown in the article.
oooh! I got your point. When the girl, who had never been playing basketball, was getting positive cheers could get the ball in there. This was actually the trick of persuasion of her mind that I can do it, without any stress because the crowd was showing that they were impressed by her “too close missed shots”. But when the guy already having 9 in a row, was getting a negative cheers, got stress and could not do it.
Its true I have felt the same while playing table tennis the moment the opponent started cheering his shots and saying negative and loose to my shot and single miss I became nervous and all of a sudden I could see I was missing the easiest shots. I realized that my mindset made me do so now when i play I pay full attention to myself and just laugh and ignore what the other person say this was i can now perform better.
I dealt with this in highschool. Majority of the kids hated me lol. Ended up showing each and every student off. Any sport, any game, any team. We won so long as I was on the team. Mind you, I’d have comments hurled at me during, and whispering of negativity. Didn’t let it bother me, actually helped if anything. Already good, and wouldn’t have failed. However seeing others that wanted me to fail, drove me further and at times i’d go above and beyond my means. Even with game making shots. No one would care, they’d cheer for winning, and not cheer for me. Was quite funny, ignorance is bliss, I was living the whole time.

This is not negative reinforcement, its positive punishment. Since they are actively adding in discouragement, to try and worsen the second guy’s ability to shoot. He was still punished/boo’d after nailing a shot. Negative reinforcement would be if they took something away from him to try and make him shoot better.
It also proves not everyone has the same mental fortitude. If the last guy had a stronger mental fortitude the negativity wouldn’t have mattered at all. Same goes for all high level athletes. The professionals learn this to make it into the big leagues. Also why good players can’t make it in the big leagues.
is this test really about testing positivity? from my subjective perspective, it seems more of a “social” expectation thingy. the crowd “expects” him to fail, and gave him negative cues (verbal/nonverbal). he was merely affected by the “social pressure” at that current moment. so just with one field study, we can come up with conclusions showing there’s effect? no wonder there’s a replication crisis right now. What if it isnt the negativity that cause him to “fail”? but rather, how he is pressured to “conform” to the crowd’s belief? Any opinions?
You can use two different people to prove this point, you have to use positive and negative reinforcement on the same person doing the same exercise because people respond to external feeders differently. Some people actually respond better against hostile crowds due to competitiveness. The guy is probably not used to pressure or negative energy. But nice, try!

I will say I’m a little skeptical of this overall. I see the point they’re trying to make, but the guy isn’t a pro-NBA player, just pretty good. They say this all about positive versus negative thinking, but I think change of environment relating to one’s personal focus is something to consider as well. Being blindfolded first (not sure what that had to do with it), probably shook his confidence the most, as it made him miss, and doubt himself. So if anything, the point should be made that before judging yourself, you should always take into account surrounding factors, and how they could change how you perform.
