Arizona Sun Blanket Flower Cultivation Tips?

The Arizona Sun Blanket Flower, also known as Gaillardia arizona, is a prairie native with vivid flower color from early summer until frost. This sun-loving prairie native with daisy-like flowers needs little water and 6-8 hours of full sun for optimal growth. To prevent yellowing leaves and wilting, establish a weekly watering schedule.

Gaillardia grandiflora, also known as Arizona sun blanket flower, is a perennial evergreen or deciduous plant that can grow as an annual plant. It is a type of Gaillardia wildflower with large, daisy-like blooms that has a tap root. These bright, cheery flowers actually prefer poor soil and heat and are short-lived when planted in clay soil.

To grow blanket flowers, plant them in full sun, in poor, but well-draining soil, and avoid planting this flower in clay soil. Water to moisten the soil but do not oversaturate. The plant should only be grown in full sunlight, preferring dry to average moisture levels with very well-drained soil.

Gaillardia seeds need light to germinate, so rough up soil before sowing, toss seeds onto the prepared area, and keep it moist until seeds sprout. This plant is easy to grow, as long as it receives the harsh type of neglect that’s required to prosper. Gaillardia tolerates heat and drought with moderate watering and consistent dead-heading. If started indoors at least eight weeks before transplanting out into the garden, this plant should only be grown in full sunlight.

In summary, the Arizona Sun Blanket Flower is a versatile and easy-to-grow perennial wildflower that thrives in hot, sunny conditions. It requires proper care, including planting in full sun, using compost and Yum Yum Mix, and maintaining good drainage.

  • We planted some Gaillardia from the SpinTop series, and various sites indicate they grow about 12-15″ high and wide, which seems a good deal more compact than the variety you were documenting. We spaced them 18-20″ apart rather than 12-15″ apart here in Central Texas (zone 8b) because I suspect they’ll be a bit larger than tagged.

  • Thank you that was great I really like your presentation! I’ve grown blanket flowers in the desert for years. And I have always found that after the first season they get long and leggy, they fall over and they look really ratty. For the first time ever I see your plants are bushy and mounding. How on earth do you get that to happen? Is it our weather? Mine have never looked anything like that. Any thoughts?

  • I live in the Suwannee River Basin which includes the Suwannee and tributaries. Withlacoochee River, Alapaha, Santa Fe River and Ichetucknee River. We are about to have black eyed Susans covering the ditches along with those beauties. I also grow them in rock gardens in the backyard. They are about to go put on their summer spring show

  • aAh your garden looks so pretty, I have one of these plants for 3 years but it was short short, like6 inches tall and produced crazy amount of flowers, I kill it at the beginning of this year by mistake :(, I guess it drop some seeds which they never work before and I have a brand new plant but this one, the flowers look the same but the plant is tall, this year was hard to find this plant, and now almost summer over I see few for sale but very expensive, going to try to save seeds this year.
