Are Orchids Suited For Dish Soap?

Orchid care, also known as orchid culture, involves a balance of water, fertilizer, light, temperature, air movement, and humidity. To maintain a healthy orchid, it is essential to follow these basic steps:

  1. Clean the roots by placing them in a solution of Bronner’s or mild dish soap.
  2. Mix 1 teaspoon of neem oil with 1 quart of warm water and stir.
  3. Apply the mixture to the top and bottom of the orchid’s leaves using a spray bottle.
  4. Remove aphids manually by using a dry paper towel and squeezing 1 drop of mild liquid dish detergent into 1 c (240 mL) of water.
  5. Mix 1 teaspoon (5 ml) of neem oil and ½ teaspoon (2.5 ml) of a gentle, plant-safe liquid dish soap to 1 quart (.9 l) of warm water.
  6. Use a mild dishwashing detergent to treat aphids and other pests.
  7. Allow the orchids to dry out one day longer than normal before watering.
  8. Use 2-3 tablespoons per 32oz water in a spray bottle for counters, bathroom, etc.
  9. Use a pesticidal oil (neem oil or sunoil) to kill pests in your orchids.
  10. Mix a small spray bottle filled with water and 1/2 teaspoon of dawn dish soap to kill pests.

In summary, maintaining an orchid’s health requires a balance of water, fertilizer, light, temperature, air movement, and humidity. To keep pests away, use a mild dishwashing detergent and mix it with water and alcohol. Additionally, use a gentle liquid dish detergent to massage the leaves, stems, and buds with soapy water.

  • Excellent information! I had no idea about the distortions with over use of CalMag! My books don’t even mention that. I’m still hands on Phalaenopsis NOID only while you teach me more. I’m researching AOS & ROS stuff online as well. Trying to figure out weather here & my grow space- you’re other article on your set up was helpful. Those bits will help me select plants. Thanks so much…

  • Roger What a great article I’m just a novice but for a fairly technical subject ( for me anyway) I understood 95 percent. Thanks for your time and knowledge. We’re struggling here in oz at the moment with the heat. Many places have had over 40 for 20 to 40 days in a row. Pity the poor window sill growers. I’m in Newcastle with an adjustable roof on my patio so we’re surviving. Cheers. Kath

  • Adding organic a fresh egg shells that have been baked in the oven a little bit to kill off the bad stuff and then ground in a coffee grinder that is a clean one no grounds in it. And then occasionally sprinkle over the root base of a Cattleya I have amazing growth. It has grown multiple leads this winter it started last summer at the end and he’s just kept growing and putting that roots and it’s amazing. So about once a month I will ask some ground egg shells not store bought unless they’ve been boiled cuz you don’t want the additives that they put on the outside of the egg.

  • One of the hardest topics for some to wrap their heads around, and some of this still boggles me. I’ve had to call my son and say okay explain this crap to me. Couple weeks back I threw out an entire batch of feed, being sick I went inside to be unwell and totally forgot what I added. Ended up with a ph of almost 9, and tds of over 350. Lessons learned & still learning. Have a good day.
