Are Carnations Toxic To Turtles?

Tortoises are herbivorous reptiles that consume only vegetation for their diet, and many common plants are toxic to them. Carnations, known for their vibrant colors and sweet fragrance, are not toxic to tortoises but should be fed in moderation due to their high fiber content. Keepers must ensure that their tortoises are not consuming any plants that are toxic to them.

Dandelions, although considered one of the most obnoxious weeds, are perfect for tortoises as they can snack on all parts of the plants. However, some plants, such as Dianthus, are high in saponins and could cause gastrointestinal upsets, but can be given as a small part of a varied diet. Wild Lettuce (Bitter Lettuce; Opium) is a moderate feed as it contains small alkaloid amounts but is fine as long as they are offered to tortoises in small quantities.

Plants poisonous to tortoises include Burrows for Hatchlings, Gazania spp., and garden snails. These plants contain irritating substances known as oxalate salts, which can cause burning, swelling, and pain when contact with the sap. Treatment for these symptoms includes rinsing mouth, washing with soap and water if contact with skin, and observing for problems in swallowing and breathing. Consult a veterinarian or reptile specialist for specific dietary recommendations for your tortoise.

What can Russian tortoises eat?

Russian Tortoises are herbivores, preferring leafy greens and a high fiber diet of hay, dark lettuces, greens, vegetables, and fruits. They should not be fed nutrient-deficient iceberg lettuce, grains, or meat. Pellet-based diets are not nutritionally balanced and contain excess starch. A varied vegetable-based diet supplemented with calcium powder containing vitamin D3 twice a week is preferable, especially if they are housed indoors with limited UV light exposure or if they are growing or pregnant. Adult, non-breeding tortoises housed outdoors with full UV exposure and fed a varied diet generally do not need regular calcium or vitamin supplementation.

Tortoises enjoy Geraniums, with the Balcon Geranium being the best performer. To keep tortoises healthy and nutrient-rich, they should be provided with a variety of plants, including ornamental and adaptable plants. These plants can be grown in containers and can be grown in Southern California, where local conditions may vary. For example, the Tropical Hibiscus may freeze and not recover in areas with cold temperatures below 30° F (-1° C). Gardeners may treat the plant as an annual, setting out fresh plants each spring.

Plants for tortoises should be free of residues from pesticides, fungicides, or herbicides, as little information exists on their effects on cold-blooded animals. Granular fertilizers should not be used in tortoises’ living and grazing areas, and snail bait should be avoided due to its toxic nature. It is crucial to avoid exposure to these substances and to ensure that plants are free of residues from pesticides, fungicides, or herbicides.

To ensure the best care for your Russian tortoise, it is essential to provide a suitable enclosure. Glass aquariums are suitable for hatchlings and small juveniles, but adults need larger enclosures for daily exercise and air circulation. A 75-gallon aquarium or larger is suitable for most adults. Custom enclosures can be built using materials like Plexi-glass, acrylic, wood, or screen, and should be around 4 feet wide by 4 feet long and 8-12 inches deep.

Rubbermaid storage containers and under the bed storage boxes are popular options for housing tortoises of all ages. Adult Russian tortoises can be comfortably kept in a 50-gallon Rubbermaid container, which has large open tops for better air circulation and rounded corners for easier cleaning. These containers are easy to clean and inexpensive, and can be modified to suit the tortoise’s needs.

There should be two hide boxes available for Russian tortoises, one on the cooler side and the warmer side. Hide boxes can be created from cork bark half logs, half terracotta plant pots, large PVC pipes, and wooden huts, and the tortoise should be able to turn itself around in the hide area.

  • Oh God, I would so be in trouble here. It grows all over my yard. The thing that makes Pothos plants poisonous is the insoluble calcium oxalate crystals contained within their leaves and stems. Spinach has the same more on the outsides and can be washed off. (Another reason not to feed them a bunch of it. ) Cute article. Love Solomon. Thanks

  • So it’s definitely big then! That enclosure is pretty sizable. Can’t wait to find out what it is. Are you planning on keeping all of the young iguanas you have or are you trying to sell them? You have the 4 in the the two enclosures by the pond, Guapo and Lola (obvs they won’t be going anywhere) the three in the cage next to Slinky and didn’t you hatch like 12 babies this year? I may even be forgetting some but regardless that is a LOT of iguanas!

  • So crazy I remember thouse plants back when I was a very very young lad. Me and my friends used to take thouse plants and take maybe a very very VERY small piece and chew them and spit them out (we didnt swallow and eat them). We didnt know that it was poisonous all we knew was that it made our mouth numb. IF THERES ANY KIDS READING THIS DO NOT DO THIS as this made us very sick at some point and one of my friends ebeded up at the hospital bc of it. We soon after stopped after the doctor has told us that they were poisonous.
