The ALS-inhibitors (Group 2), including Prowl and Dual, control similar weed species in sunflowers, with Beyond having more activity on grass weeds. However, some weeds are resistant to these herbicides, such as kochia and waterhemp. To maintain the yield and quality of sunflowers, a comprehensive weed management strategy that includes timely herbicide applications, the right tank mix partners, and crop rotation can be used.
Soil-applied herbicides available for use in sunflower include EPTC (Eptam), ethalfluralin (Sonalan), S-metolachlor (Dual Magnum), and pendimethalin. Low volumes will control small weeds with an open crop canopy, high volumes improve weed control in thick crops or dense weed population, and high pressure improves weed control in thick crops.
There are three major options for weed control in sunflowers: tilling or hoeing between the rows, using chemicals, or using a Clearfield sunflower variety in combination. A tank-mix of Dual Magnum or Zidua plus Spartan (Authority Elite, BroadAxe, Authority Supreme) applied preemergence followed by a postemergence application of Beyond is a good herbicide program for Clearfield sunflowers.
Dual Magnum herbicide is used to manage annual grass and small-seeded broadleaf weeds. It can be applied post-emergence as a tank-mix partner or in the fall. If you cannot find the Spartan herbicide, use a stiff rate of Dual. If you cannot find the Spartan, use a stiff rate of Dual.
For other sunflowers, you can use the Dual and Clethodim herbicides. Dual Magnum herbicide may be applied either as a preplant incorporated broadcast treatment or as a pre-emerge broadcast treatment. It should not be tankmixed with any other herbicide and should not be applied with MSO adjuvant. Sunflower injury may occur when applied at high temperature and humidity.

Can I spray Clethodim on sunflowers?
Clethodim is a selective herbicide utilized for the management of grass weeds in a range of crops, including soybeans, cotton, lentils, peas, peanuts, and sunflowers.
How do you treat sunflowers?
To care for sunflowers, support tall ones with stakes and feed them weekly with a high potassium feed, such as tomato feed. Water them regularly during dry periods, as they can’t recover if left to dry out. Sunflowers come in various sizes, from dwarf to giant, and can have red, orange, or white blooms. Sowing sunflowers is a great way to get kids into gardening and is perfect for wildlife-friendly gardens.
There are over seventy different sunflower varieties available, with some dwarf varieties growing up to 50cm (20in) high. The Russian Giant sunflower is a popular choice, standing at 3m (10ft) tall with bright golden-yellow flowers.
How do you save a dying sunflower?
To prevent premature wilting of sunflowers, it is recommended that their stems be cut short and that they be placed in warm water for additional support.
What is a home remedy for sunflowers?
To maintain vibrant and healthy sunflowers, it is recommended to add a source of nitrogen, such as sugar, lemon juice, or vinegar, to the irrigation water. It is advisable to avoid direct sunlight, cool drafts, or heat, as sunflowers are not as tolerant of these conditions as they are in the field. It is essential to conduct regular assessments of the stems, pruning them as necessary, and replacing the water solution to guarantee optimal sunflower health.
What is the best thing to spray on plant leaves?
Lemon juice and water are effective DIY solutions for cleaning plant leaves with hard water spots. Mix equal parts of lemon juice and water in a spray bottle and use a soft cloth to clean the leaves. For delicate plants like African violets, use a soft brush to gently brush off dust and dirt. Baby oil, coconut oil, or olive oil are not safe for plant leaves due to their heavy weight and potential long-term effects on the plant’s ability to photosynthesize. Instead, use DIY products or leaf shine products from big box stores.
In summary, lemon juice and water are effective DIY solutions for cleaning plant leaves, but it’s important to use gentle, non-toxic products like baby oil, coconut oil, or olive oil to ensure the health and growth of your plants.
Is Dual Magnum a post-emergent herbicide?
Dual Magnum® herbicide is a preplant surface-applied, preplant incorporated, or preemergence application used to manage annual grass and small-seeded broadleaf weeds. It can be applied post-emergence or in the fall for specific geographies. It is registered for use on various crops like corn, cotton, and soybeans. It is important to read label instructions and check with local extension services for registration status.

Can I spray neem oil on sunflower plants?
Sunflowers can suffer from powdery mildew or rust, but healthy plants can handle these diseases. If your sunflowers develop these diseases, organic pesticides like copper fungicide or neem oil can be used. However, it’s important to test the oil on a small area first. Sunflower seeds should be harvested in early fall, when the back side of the head changes color and the flower head bows. Once harvested, cut off the seed heads, leave a foot of stalk attached, and hang them in a warm, dry, well-ventilated place for a few weeks. After drying, remove the seeds by hand or rubbing two seed heads together. Alternatively, place the seed heads in a bird feeder for birds to enjoy.

Join us as we spray pre-emergents on the corn and sunflower fields.
Hello from Oklahoma Great information. I’m planting a new field this year about 2.5 acres that was over grown. It was about waist high and thick with weeds. So far I have burned it then when it started growing back I sprayed it with round up just to try and clear it. I plan on planting Millet this year just to get something in the ground. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks 4 ur sharing this with us i have been fixing dove field for about 40 yrs and have never used chemicals and always wondered why i didn have clean fields i am gona try ur methods i have the dwarf corn and clearfield sun flowers planted now will plant proso millet at the end of july thanks again 4 sharing i am in middle ga
I know a silly question, but that pre-emergent doesn’t affect the corn or sunflowers? I guess being clearfield they are designed around those chemicals. I’m heading out in the morning for likely my last turkey hunt of the season and then going to head to the dove field and mow it. I really knocked out the crab grass last year with all of my spraying. Right now all I have are sour weed, dandelion and some other winter type weeds. They have all been sprayed and are dead so I need to mow in preparation for plowing. Man time sneaks up on you quickly.
Put in 5 acres of sunflowers today with the 2 row planter. My buddy has the electric sprayer and I have the pto 50 gallon sprayer. You are right. The pto sprayer is much faster. We put glyphosate, prowl, brawl and Spartan charge down right after planting today. Looks like we have shower chance Friday/Saturday. 🤞
