Spatter and splatter are popular watercolor techniques for creating texture. They involve using drops of water to create an abstract background, and the paint used may need to be adjusted for the best effect. Experiment with different paint-to-water ratios to find your preferred consistency.
Splatter painting is an easy and expressive way to create abstract art that requires a canvas, paint, and an open mind for disorder. To render wood to look old, paint realistic plaster (using a sponge), and paint rust (chain and nail). To splatter paint on a canvas, dip the end of a toothbrush in watered down acrylic paint.
Glue size is a water-based non-toxic formula made by mixing old-fashioned PVA glue with lots of water and is used for sealing applications in solid. Use a clean cloth or pad of steel wool to rub oil into the wood, wipe off excess oil, and let it dry overnight. Spray the surface with lacquer thinner to reactivate the lacquer and allow moisture to escape before it dries again.
To remove heat/water marks from wood, try toothpaste, oil and vinegar, and a special white ring remove cloth. WOW! This is better then I could imagine. I had a large water spot and did as she said with the salt and olive oil. I left in on 10 minutes because I forgot it. When I wiped it off that spot was nearly all gone and it had been a bad water stain BUT that’s not the best part, I wiped down the rest of the top of the table by putting the used salt and olive oil solution back on the whole top of the bench and left it 10 minutes, and when I wiped it the stain left was gone, but the color fo the bench was deeper and beautiful. OMG!. Thanks for showing us this.
Hi ! wow thanks so much for this !! I found a big water mark under one of my plant pots on finished varnished wood and really was skeptical this would work ..but it did !!!! I also did not know whether you should treat the stain after ..since salt had been on it…so I just polished it with my homemade polish of 1/4 cup olive oil and 2 TBsp vinegar . It looks marvellous !! thanks so much again for this saver !!!
Wow, thank you so much for this tip! The cabinets below my sink are really water damaged, and I thought I would have to restain. Ugh! However, I thought I would give this a go before I committed to that time-consuming and costly process and voilà! It worked great! Great tip for all sorts of water damaged wood.
Hi Christina, your article came up when I googled removing stains from wood. It worked a treat but took longer than 10 minutes on a really old stain caused by spilling wine on a wooden table. Thanks from Western Australia for a great tip. I’ve subscribed now to keep up with any other great tips you might have.
I honestly didn’t think this would work on the gigantic water stain I caused on my husband’s favourite coffee table, BUT IT DID! I waited 5 minutes, and as I wiped it off, I could not find the location again. The stain has simply vanished. Great trick! Life- and money saver! Let me share one in return: For dents and scratches, rub the edible part of a walnut into it, carefully wipe off the crumbs, and then go over it with wood oil or something similar. Hope this is helpful for anyone.
I tried olive oil and sea salt and it didn’t work but I used murphy’s oil and let it soak in and then used mr clean’s eraser sponge and it removed an old thick white stain from my little cute light weight antique table that I love! It worked beautifully! Hope this helps the people that still have spots! 😉
We just used the salt and olive oil mix on a significantly water damaged pine dresser – worse than in your example – the results are unbelievably good.. We then repeated it on a drawer and cupboard unit that had numerous areas of fading, wear and tear and some significant scratches and the results were even better, the unit which we are giving away to a local charity to sell is now like new! Thank you so much from Ireland for this cheap but wonderful tip!
I just bought a new table and celebrated Halloween. My daughter unknowingly left a water mark on it. I was sad. I thought, “oh no! my new table.” but I did as you said and the mark is GONE! OMG! I was afraid that I would have to use a table cloth and cover up the beauty of the wood. But thanks to you! I have my table back in tip top shape! 🙂
Does the salt and olive oil last? I have a walnut stained bedside table and has a few water spots and a small chip and I tried to buff off the water spot with a slightly damped micro fibre cloth and now it looks like the walnut stain has lifted I think and looks like raw timber colour. I’m going to try this salt and olive oil trick now.
will try. thank you. Everyone should know, no method is a 100% cure. Wood objects begin to deteriorate as soon as you craft them. All you can do is treat and repair until the methods no longer work and you are left with a dried, bleached banana looking, cracked and frail piece of fire wood. 😊 How often you treat it depends on how long it will live. Even laminate wood gets worn out once the lamination is rubbed and worn off over time. Any idea why old wooden desks are worth good money?.. Most are all dead and gone and rarity = money.
i used my bedroom furniture as a dinner table for the first half of my life, and even though it was 200 year old furniture I never really cared growing up, used this trick and even three days later it looks much better. only did half of each piece to see the difference but had to finish them off because it looked to unnatural
