Wäre es eigentlich zu doof, eine lila Schrift für diesen Artikel zu verwenden? Ich denke... ja, würde es. Weil nichts über die Flieder, die ich in Boston Arnold Arboretum sah, albern war. Glorreich, hinreißend, gigantisch, anmutig, aber nicht doof.

Der Lilacsonntag ist der zweite Sonntag im Mai im Arnold Arboretum. Lila Züchter versuchen, die Blütezeit zu verlängern, die Farbe oder Form der Blätter, der Blütenblätter oder der Blüten zu variieren, um mehr oder weniger stark duftende Flieder zu züchten. Sie versuchen, Sträucher zu züchten, die kompakter sind, die widerstandsfähiger gegen Krankheiten sind, und solche zu züchten, die auf allen Gehölzen wachsen, nicht nur auf altem Wachstum. Ursprünglich blühten alle Flieder während derselben zweiwöchigen Periode; jetzt blühen sie über eine vier bis sechs Wochen Verbreitung! Deshalb werden nur bestimmte Flieder in diesem Artikel vorgestellt... Ich bin zwei, drei Wochen später nicht mehr zurückgegangen.

Das unten ist der älteste Flieder in der Sammlung, gewachsen von einem Samen, der 1876 aus Japan gebracht wurde. Er blühte nicht an dem Tag, an dem wir dort waren, aber er war immer noch prächtig und präsidierte majestätisch über die Fliederreihe.
